Chattanooga, TN: The Tennessee Aquarium

From left to right: my sister Coco (kneeling), me, my mom, and Wayne at the Tennessee Aquarium My husband’s job demands a lot of hours from him, so our time together is limited. When he finally got a day off a while back, he suggested we take a drive two hours south to check out the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga. A day trip away with my husband and a trip to an aquarium? I was all over it. However, I wasn’t expecting much of Chattanooga’s aquarium. I mean, it’s Chattanooga for crying out loud. Their main claim to fame is … Continue reading

World Aquarium = World Record?

World Aquarium is located in the City Museum in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. It is a must-see attraction if you are in the St. Louis area. It covers more than 13,000 square feet and allows you the opportunity to get up close and personal with small sharks, piranhas, catfish, crabs, alligators and turtles. The hands-on exhibits are without a doubt the star attractions at the aquarium. HOWEVER, if you are lucky enough to make the trip in the next few weeks you will be able to get a first hand look at more than just dolphins, river otters, and penguins. … Continue reading

The Best Animals on the Internet

I thought I would use today’s blog to have some lighthearted fun to send us into the long weekend. I’m highlighting my favorite animal videos and stories that I’ve found around the web. They’re not long enough to warrant entire posts like the times I’ve talked about dog and capybara best friends or countries-crossing cats, but altogether they’ll make for an amusing way to start off the weekend early. The first video I want to share—my absolute favorite animal video online—features two adorable otters. They might be good friends or maybe they’re sweethearts, but they spend the majority of the … Continue reading

Saving on Summer Travel—-It is Possible

As long as you don’t fly American Airlines. All kidding aside news on the travel front has been anything but encouraging this week. From record high gas prices (the cost for a gallon of unleaded fuel has topped the $4 mark in dozens of major cities across the country) to insane added fees tacked on by airlines that claim to be suffering in a slumping economy, you practically need to win the lottery to afford to take a family vacation these days. Luckily there are some sectors of the travel industry that are helping families salvage their summer vacations. Several … Continue reading

Digital Cameras for KIDS

If you have budding photographers in your family then you are likely familiar with the colorful, chubby digital cameras made just for kids. They are all the rage in my daughter’s playgroup and those kids are all under 4 years old. But the cameras are not only popular with our friends; I’ve seen the Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Digital Cameras (pink for girls and blue for boys) being toted around by random children at various public venues from the zoo to the state fair, the aquarium to the children’s museum. Despite the fact that my daughter’s pals have digital cameras and she … Continue reading

Quiet Destinations–Escaping the Holiday Chaos

Tomorrow is Black Friday. A time when shopping bags, elbows, expletives, and in some cases, even fists fly. If you are looking to escape from the midnight mall madness, the customer–driven craziness, and the all encompassing chaos that accompanies the official kick-off to the holiday shopping season then consider traveling to northwest Missouri. That’s where you’ll find Conception Abbey, one of several Roman Catholic Benedictine monasteries around the world that are open to groups and individuals looking for a safe haven to reflect, pray, meditate or simply escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life (especially during the Christmas … Continue reading

St. Louis Side Trips

You’ve done The Arch and toured the riverboats, so what else does St. Louis have to offer? If you love the great outdoors and are up for a family adventure consider heading out to these other local hotspots near “Mound City.” Meramec Caverns Located about an hour southwest of St. Louis in Stanton, Missouri is a place known to many as the infamous hideout where Jesse James and his brother, Frank would count their loot after their latest bank or train heist. Believe me, their secret hideaway is no longer a secret given that now the road to the caverns … Continue reading

Mystery Shopping: What to Expect on an Amusement Park Shop

Amusement parks are one of the lowest paying shops when you consider them on an hourly basis. Often, you’ll be paying to shop them. That said, they’re also probably the most fun! Yes, you’re working. Yes, you’re making observations. But you’re not doing that every minute of the time you’re there. We have visited over a dozen different amusement parks, zoos, aquariums, sporting events, and other amusement venues as mystery shops. It’s a chance to do things we would normally have difficulty fitting into our budget. Every company and every client is different, but here are some basics that are … Continue reading

The Long and Short Of It

Some things you just have to see to believe. Such is the case with the world’s tallest living man. I saw his picture on the “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not” website and my jaw nearly hit the floor. His name is Bao Xishun, and he stands 7-foot-9-inches tall. But, what makes his story even more interesting (and this has nothing to do with his inclusion on the website) is what he is doing with his record setting height. Xishun made headlines yesterday for using his long arms to save two dolphins. It really is an incredible story. A couple of … Continue reading
