And according to the Air Transport Association, 99% of the animals reach their destinations without incident. (Not bad, unless your pet was part of that one percent.) In my previous blog I provided facts to consider before you take to the skies with your beloved furry friends domestically. If you are flying internationally check out El Al Israel Airlines, it was the first international airline to introduce a frequent flyer plan with its Points for Pets program in 2001. The airline flies from New York to Tel Aviv. After three trips in a three-year period, your pet can earn a free ticket. It's a nice perk, but hands down the leader in the field of international pet travel is Virgin Atlantic Airlines. Its Passport for Pets program is considered the best in the world... and for good reason. On their very first Virgin Atlantic flight, your high-flying fur baby will be given a special welcome aboard pet pack, which includes a toy mouse called "Red" and a Virgin collar tag. Four-legged passengers are also given a special passport that records their flights and allows them to collect "paw prints" which they will be able to redeem for gifts. According to the program's rules, one "print" is awarded per flight and once your pet has collected five points, he or she is eligible for goodies, such as handmade Virgin bowls or a specially designed non-slip mat so they can "dine in style." You can also choose to donate Fido's rewards point to his favorite registered animal charity or sanctuary. Virgin Atlantic will give up to $100 to the charity of your pet's choice. In addition, your shaggy pal can donate 1,000 bonus air miles to your Virgin flying club account so you may receive a free flight or upgrade sooner. Finally, once your pet has flown 10, 15 or 20 times, he or she qualifies to receive a visit to an upscale pet salon; be fitted for a designer pet outfit or be given a personal "pawtrait" from the famous English artist Cindy Lass, renowned for her paintings of celebrities' furry companions. The Passports for Pets reward program is available on most Virgin Atlantic flights between American cities and the United Kingdom.
