Ask a Baby Blogger: C-Sections and Bonding After Birth

Question: Do mothers who have c-sections not bond as well with their babies? This is not a question someone e-mailed me, but rather something that was being discussed in the forums. It’s a very sensitive issue and frankly, I think there has been made much ado about nothing. Bonding is NOT a one time event. It is not this little narrow window of opportunity that once is lost, is gone forever. It is a process and to be honest, I think a lot of people don’t understand what exactly is meant by bonding when they talk about it. What is … Continue reading

Planning Your Babymoon

You may have heard the term “babymoon” and wonder what it means. Simply put, a babymoon is the period of time just after your new baby is born. When you first got married, the honeymoon was that period of time just after your wedding. The couple spends time alone together, bonding as a married couple. A babymoon is similar, only it’s your new baby you will be bonding and enjoying alone time with. This is the first two weeks or so at home with your new baby. It’s a beautiful time for the parents and baby to get to know … Continue reading

Sometimes Pregnancy Seems Endless

This week last year, I was walking laps around my house, around the block, around the mall and just about everywhere else. I was massaging every square inch of my ankles and feet. I was ordering the spiciest burritos on the menu at San Jose’s. I was watching TV in a squatting position and mopping the floors full speed. I was doing all these things because I was 39 weeks pregnant and completely sick of it. At one point, I burst into tears and sobbed to my husband, “I don’t want to be pregnant anymore!!” The last few weeks of … Continue reading

Pregnancy and Romance

There’s a line I love in “Love Comes Softly,” a Hallmark movie starring Katherine Heigl, about a widow who must live with a recently widowed young man and his daughter. In this particular scene she’s explaining to young Missie how she became pregnant with her late husband. She says, “My husband Aaron loved me so much that it spilled over and made a baby.” Missie says, “What spilled over?” “It,” Marty replies. Missie asks, “What is it?” Marty says, “The love.” It’s a cute way to explain pregnancy to a child, and yet it’s funny how dangerously close to the … Continue reading

9-9-09 Travel Incentives

When my brother was born on the ninth day of the ninth month at 9:09 a.m. (32 years ago) no one in our family ever considered how auspicious his birthday would be in the year 2009. While it may not be as lucky as 7-7-07, Wednesday’s 9-9-09 is still being celebrated in a big way by the travel industry. Dozens of hotels and resorts are offering matching month-day-year dates promotions. For example, in Atlantic City, the ultra swanky Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is offering $99 room rates ($112.86 with tax) Sunday-Thursday through September 30th, depending on availability. Also, on … Continue reading

Stress, Weight Gain and Depression in Adoptive Parents

“At least you don’t have to deal with the ‘maternity forty’!” chirped a colleague while I waiting for my third child’s arrival from Korea. Adoptive parents frequently hear comments like, “Oh, you’re doing it the easy way”. Now, having had a difficult pregnancy myself, I’m inclined to agree that MY adoption process wasn’t as difficult as my pregnancy. But I was blessed to have had the choice both to conceive and to adopt. Remember that many adoptive parents have been dealing with the grief of infertility. They often feel that their dreams of a family are at the mercy of … Continue reading

Baby Born at 37,000 Feet

People living in Northern Canada could have never known what was going on in the skies above their homes last week while they were eating dinner. A female passenger on a Korean Air Lines flight was giving birth to a baby. According to reports, Jadan Brown was delivered last Wednesday by his father Larry, an emergency medical worker, and a Korean surgeon who happened to be onboard the flight from the Philippines to New York City. Isn’t it amazing that whenever a major medical emergency occurs on a flight (major enough to make headlines, anyway) that a doctor, nurse or … Continue reading
