Voluntourism Goes High End

I've discussed this travel trend in previous blogs, but the buzz surrounding philanthropic vacations is getting even louder now that big spenders are joining in on the fad.

An increasing amount of travelers with deep pockets (a.k.a. "luxury consumers") are embracing the idea of being socially responsible at vacation hot spots the world over, according to a new study.

If you happen to be one of the many high-end tripsters looking to give back to a community that you're visiting you will be delighted to know Ritz-Carlton has your back (as in backbreaking work followed by a full back massage).

Beginning April 1st all 70 Ritz-Carltons worldwide will have at least one volunteer travel package option. Most deal with preserving the environment such as aiding in the conservation of palm trees in Chile and helping protect endangered blue iguanas on Grand Cayman Island. Other options include working at orphanages or helping out in food kitchens.

Ritz-Carlton calls it their "Give Back Getaways." You pay for a room at the hotel plus an additional fee and they set you up with an organization that could use extra hands. According to hotel execs, most programs last a half-day and run $50-$100 to cover transportation and a donation to the charity or group.

For example, the "Give Back Getaways" package at the Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner near Washington, D.C., gives guests the chance to aid the Rainbow Center riding program, which serves psychologically or physically challenged children. If you'd rather skip the urban jungle for the real deal head to the Ritz-Carlton in Chile where you can spend your days planting trees and trimming exotic plants, then return to the hotel for a full body massage and a night of pampering.

Program directors say the travel package gives hotel guests the chance to do something significant that will have a positive impact of both the community and the volunteer. What's more, they say they hope hotel guests participating in the program will continue to donate their time and talents to their own communities once they get home.
