Florida Airport Going to the Dogs and L.A. Zoo’s Newest Attraction

Southwest Florida International Airport is going to the dogs. Make that “A” dog. A very smart border collie named Radar to be exact. The 9-year-old pooch earned his name by helping airport officials patrol the runway. Radar’s job: chase away birds and other critters that could be sucked into aircraft engines. It’s a serious task and one Radar has effectively mastered since being hired back in 2001. Airport administrators say border collies like Radar scare the birds but don’t harm them. Only, airport workers say they can’t take credit for coming up with the pooch patrol idea. The military was … Continue reading

Los Angeles Zoo’s Newest Resident

You now have one more reason to visit the Los Angeles Zoo. For those of you who have never made the trip, the L.A. Zoo is one of the only places in the world where you can see the rare and endangered Sumatran rhino and Arabian Oryx living within walking distance of each other. But these days it is a slightly less exotic animal that is drawing big crowds to the metropolitan zoo. His name is Reggie. He measures 7 1/2–feet-long, weighs about 115 pounds and… he’s an alligator. But, not just any alligator… Reggie, the alligator has a storied … Continue reading

Another Reason To Visit Atlanta

Regular readers of this blog know I have been very outspoken about my love for “The City Too Busy To Hate.” I got my first taste of Atlanta, Georgia in 1996 when I moved there to cover the Summer Olympic Games, and as the saying goes, the rest is history. From the people (expect for some drivers who got upset with me for driving too slow on the Perimeter—I was going 82 m.p.h.) to the parks, the museums to the food, the zoos, and all of the other family friendly attractions, Hotlanta is hard to beat. If you have never … Continue reading

Atlanta—Where To Go Outside Of The City

When I was young, single and living in Atlanta (years ago) I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my days off from work than strolling through the area’s premier shopping centers—Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza. Eventually, after I burned one too many holes in my wallet from doing so I decided I needed to venture beyond the malls and explore the other incredible attractions the city had to offer. I’ve featured several of them in previous blogs, but most of those included hot spots in the city proper. If you travel to Atlanta you’ll likely find that some … Continue reading

Visiting Zoo Atlanta

Not that you needed another, but now there’s one more reason to stop by Zoo Atlanta. A new resident has arrived at the zoo (and made history in the process)—she is the … Continue reading

Where to Spend Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Other Vacation Options

In three days the United States will honor Martin Luther King Jr. on what would have been the civil rights leader’s 79th birthday. Festivities marking the occasion are planned throughout the country with larger celebrations taking place at major civil rights landmarks. Organizers of this weekend’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations expect an attendance boost because of the presidential primaries and the way his legacy has played a role in the campaign. In addition, this year marks the 40th anniversary of King’s death. “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off,” is this year’s theme for various … Continue reading

How Water Woes In Georgia May Affect Your Travel Plans

If you are planning to visit the Southeast region of the United States be warned—-much of the area is experiencing severe drought conditions, especially the state of Georgia. Visitors to the area will notice water conservation efforts at a variety of popular tourist attractions including the Georgia Aquarium, home of the world’s largest fish tank. Because of the drought, staff members at the always-crowded Atlanta attraction have been forced to empty some of its water displays. For example, a lake in the atrium is now … Continue reading
