Island Hopping in Hawaii

Mother Nature has not entered 2008 peacefully. As I write this my aunt and uncle in Lake Tahoe, California are dealing with blizzard-like conditions. Meanwhile, in Miami, Florida residents there are dealing with record low temperatures the likes of which they haven’t seen in more than five years. And here in the Midwest portion of the United States we are under severe fog alerts. (The fog is so thick here I can’t see the end of the driveway.) With all this inclement weather who wouldn’t want to escape to the always balmy and beautiful Hawaii? If the rotten weather has … Continue reading

Unique Ways To See Hawaii

In previous blogs I provided you with information on how to get to Hawaii. I’ve told you when to visit, where to visit, and how much it’ll set you back. If you think I’ve exhausted all of my Hawaii-related blog topics—think again. During my last visit home my brother asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I hesitated for a while, but then told him that there was one thing I have always wanted to do—parasail. He agreed during my next trip home he would take me parasailing for my birthday. That gift got me thinking about the unique … Continue reading

Music News: Elvis in Hawaii and Justin’s New Partner

ELVIS IN HAWAII Elvis fans will soon have another reason to visit Hawaii. Plans are in the works to immortalize the star of “Blue Hawaii” in bronze at the site of his historic 1973 concert “Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii.” According to a Honolulu newspaper, a life-sized bronze statute of the King wearing his signature flare-legged pants and big-collared, bejeweled shirt will be unveiled in July outside the Neal Blaisdell Center (the site of his Hawaii concert) a few blocks from downtown Honolulu. The project is a joint effort between TV Land and the city and county of Honolulu as a … Continue reading

A Unique Two-Wheeled Tour

Don’t let the title fool you—this blog isn’t about bicycle tours, rather it will detail ways you can experience military-based technology on two wheels. I’m referring to the Segway Human Transporter. I introduced (or re-introduced) you to it in my previous blog… so now that you know what they are. Here’s some information on how you can spend some time on one without shelling out $5,000 (the amount it retails for) to do so. In California you can take a Segway tour of celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. Likewise you can see the city lights of Atlanta; the incredible skyline … Continue reading

Hawaii–Visiting the Big Island’s Best Waterfalls

When you hear people say that Hawaii is “a nature lover’s paradise” don’t think of it as hyperbole. Each island is home to unique geologic wonders. I was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, home to the state’s only active volcano and a place where you can ski (the peaks of Mauna Kea) and scuba in the same day. But, a slightly less taxing activity is a trip to the Big Island’s most spectacular waterfalls. Akaka Falls and Kahuna Falls Bring your camera when you visit Akaka and Kahuna Falls. Both are located in Akaka Falls State … Continue reading

Seasonal Parent-Child Bonding on the Cheap

A winter storm watch has been issued for my neck of the woods.  Meteorologists are predicting nearly eight inches of the white stuff will fall in less than 24 hours.  As a parent, who was born and raised in Hawaii, and despises the snow and cold, I am really not looking forward to dealing with icy roads and below freezing temperatures.  Still, my kid is a Wisconsinite, so I have to do what any good mother would do—suck it up. Sacrifice; it’s the hallmark of good parenting, right? Winter presents a unique challenge for many parents.  Some days, Mother Nature’s … Continue reading
