WASHINGTON

Perhaps, America's love of "The Simpsons" is the reason the following free tour is booked solid. After all, Homer Simpson does make working at a nuclear power plant look so, uh, interesting.

Whatever the reason, when the U.S. Department of Energy offered 48 tours of the Hanford Site (that's twice as many as last year) for the public to register for on a first-come, first-serve basis it took less than 12 hours for all 2,000 spots to be filled. The tours started earlier this week and run through the summer. If you were not one of the lucky ones to nab a spot there's still hope. Newly available seats will be posted shortly before each tour when cancellations are received.

For those of you unfamiliar with the popular Washington State tourist attraction, the 586-square-mile Hanford Site is located along the Columbia River in the southeastern part of the Evergreen State. It is a plutonium production complex with nine nuclear reactors. Hanford has played a pivotal role in the nation's defense for more than 40 years, beginning in the 1940s with the Manhattan Project.

MAINE

It's not free, but this next travel deal in Maine will certainly help keep your household budget in tact. For just $125 per night you can stay at Searsport's historic Watchtide by the Sea B&B. The 200-year-old lodging features five rooms overlooking Penobscot Bay. The lodging's entire property is spread out over four acres and is less than an hour's drive from Rockland, Camden, Bangor, Deer Isle, Bar Harbor, and Acadia National Park. Included in the $125 price is a multi-course breakfast, including Virginia ham with potatoes and shirred eggs, shrimp baked in a sherry velouté sauce, and individual soufflés with smoked salmon or ham and Gruyère cheese, which is served on the B&B's sun porch. Standard rooms feature a king-size bed, and a private bath with a tub and shower. The offer is good through June 14, 2008.
