Special Needs Blog Week in Review – June 24 – 30, 2012

Every week, the Special Needs Blog Week in Review brings you a quick summary of each of the blogs that were posted here in the past seven days. It makes it easier for you to find out about the ones that you might have missed. The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on June 25, 2012. This week, I’d like to point out an episode of NPR’s “Weekend Edition Sunday”. The episode was called “Planes, Patience, and Slightly Kid-Friendlier Security”. This is a good one to listen to for parents who will be traveling by plane with their children this … Continue reading

Traveling with a Medical Condition

The security checkpoint line at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport seemingly snakes on for miles. During a recent trip the line was long (as usual) and frozen. We must have stood in place for more than 10 minutes. So, it’s no surprise that many in line became agitated while others tried maneuvering their bodies to find the source of the hold up. It was later discovered that extra security had to be called in to assist with the screening of a man with an artificial limb. The incident inspired this blog which contains some helpful tips for those who may be traveling … Continue reading

Most Important Early Pregnancy Advice

Many people might start off their first pregnancy blog with a story: why they decided to have a baby (or not), the story of how they became pregnant, their early thoughts on pregnancy and childbirth.  I might get to all of that, or I might not.  But today I want to share one of the most important things I learned in my first month of pregnancy: do not go off any medication without talking to your doctor first. This might seem silly or obvious, but I cannot stress how important it is.  My whole first trimester might have taken a … Continue reading

TSA Cares Helpline Can Answer Your Questions

Flying with young children can be stressful. It can be difficult for parents of kids who have disabilities, or certain medical conditions, to know what it will be like for their child to go through airport security. Before you fly, try calling the new TSA helpline. It might be able to answer your questions. By now, everyone has heard a few “horror stories” about parents who were hassled by the TSA, or the staff on an airplane, specifically because of their child. It is understandable that parents of kids who have special needs would feel some anxiety about traveling by … Continue reading

Love Your Kids While You Can

One of the downsides of working in TV news is being forced to stalk families who’ve just suffered devastating losses. I absolutely, positively, unequivocally despised having to request interviews from parents, who had just buried their children, be it due to a rare disease, a fatal accident or some other type of tragedy. Back then, I was young, single, and knew if I didn’t knock on the doors of the grieving families I risked losing my job. Today, I am an older, no longer taking blood money, and more importantly, a mother. I highly doubt I could stomach walking up … Continue reading

Santa Insured By Lloyd’s Of London

Lloyd’s of London, an insurance company famous for writing insurance policies on some really odd and unorthodox things, has insured Santa Claus. That’s right, Santa Claus, the one who drops off presents to all the good little girls and boys every Christmas Eve, now has a personal accident insurance policy through Lloyd’s of London. This is not the first time that Lloyd’s of London has been in the news as a result of an unusual insurance policy they have written. A model once took out a “happiness policy” with Lloyd’s of London, to insure against “worry lines” developing on her … Continue reading

Spooky Halloween Adventures

These are no kiddie Zoo Boos. The following Halloween travel attractions are not for the faint of heart. Literally. Many theme parks post large signs warning guests that suffer from heart conditions NOT to partake in the gory Halloween hauntings that are a dime a dozen this time of year, for fear it may cause serious medical emergencies. If you are cool as a cucumber and creepy mazes, disorienting strobe lights, fog and fake blood don’t make your heart skip a beat or trigger panic attacks, then you might consider traveling to the following Halloween events: Busch Gardens Williamsburg in … Continue reading

Studies That Scare

I spent nearly two decades interviewing authentic and so-called “experts,” on every topic imaginable during my years as a television reporter… which is probably why I am an extremely skeptical individual. The media is notorious for broadcasting the latest and greatest studies about X, Y and Z, and in some cases not providing all the details. For example, recently I read an interesting article about a study conducted by Danish researchers who claim that they may have found a link between jaundice and autism. My curiosity was peaked given that my daughter suffered from extreme jaundice as a newborn. Danish … Continue reading

Safe and Healthy Travel with a Senior

Senior citizens often tend to have more health problems than the average adult. Here are some things you can do to make sure your travel with an older adult is safe and healthy! Schedule a visit to the doctor about a week before the trip. Talk about any health concerns, make sure all prescriptions are filled, and address any other issues. Your doc may have some information or advice for emergencies while you are away. Ask your doctor to provide a list of past and current medical issues and how they are being treated; brand and generic names of drugs … Continue reading

Staying Healthy on Trips Abroad

Whenever I watch those Food Network shows following people on their exotic food eating adventures I often wonder if they ever sample dishes that have made them sick. In a previous blog I shared with you what happened to my brother the last time he got thirsty in Bali. And his story is not unique. Sampling local cuisine from the far ends of the planet is one of the most satisfying aspects of foreign travel. But while the delicious scents may draw you in and your palate might enjoy the culinary masterpieces, your stomach may not always be happy with … Continue reading
