Traveling to the Academy Awards

When I was younger I would sit in front of our family's TV on Oscar night and wonder how fans secured the bleacher seats that put them within reach of Hollywood's biggest names. (Okay, within reach if the celebrity crossed the street to the bleacher area.) As a 13-year-old girl I promised that someday I would travel to L.A. so I too could touch the jacket sleeve of a Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks.

More than 20 years later, I still haven't made good on that promise. However, I know others who share the same dream, have ditched their seats in front of the TV and traveled great distances to get close enough to Oscar nominees to see exactly what color their dresses are and just how big all those jewels are in person. There's no question the travel industry sees a spike in business each year around Oscar time. But, movie fans are not the only ones taking flight, celebrities are also making their annual pilgrimage to California---and they're not flying coach.

Oh, no, no. This time of year the skies over L.A. are filled with private jets stocked with champagne, truffles, and free-range chicken. Not to mention, gluten-free bread, white asparagus and Cuban cigars. Those are just some of the items offered to V.I.P guests on board Jet Aviation Business Jets, a private plane company, which caters to celebs, producers and fashion designers.

But, if you are a mega-star who likes to keep things "real," you fly United Airlines P.S. (premium service), which only runs between New York and Los Angeles. It provides the perks of a private flight - without the cost. P.S. fliers sprawl out in seats that turn into beds and can watch personal DVD players. And, did you know even the Academy's biggest star flies on United? Oscar, in his golden glory (and his 50 look-alike friends) fly on the airline to L.A. from Chicago, where they are manufactured.

Oh man, I wish I was there too Michele. We spent 2 years in San Diego and it never crossed my mind to go up to LA during the Oscars - duh!

We should sign up for the bleacher seat ticket lottery! Maybe next year.
