Traveling to New York? Think Broadway

If you thought the movie was incredible wait until you see Shrek the Musical. The popular DreamWorks Animation SKG film is headed to Broadway and despite the fact that no actor has signed on to play the title character (yet) tickets are all ready in demand.

DreamWorks Theatricals just announced that the show will open on December 14th at the Broadway Theatre, with preview performances beginning November 8th. As I mentioned earlier there's no word on who will be playing Shrek or his pal Donkey, but stage star Sutton Foster (she's currently starring as Inga in Young Frankenstein) has signed on to play Princess Fiona. Christopher Sieber, a member of the original cast of Monty Python's Spamalot, will play the evil Lord Farquaad while Kecia Lewis-Evans will be the Dragon, according to the folks at DreamWorks Theatricals.

If that doesn't have you booking a flight to the Big Apple then perhaps this news flash might: Mya is joining the long-running Broadway revival of Chicago this spring as Velma Kelly, Roxie Hart's partner it crime.

For those of you unfamiliar with this incredible actress with an amazing voice, Mya has starred in such hits as Case of the Ex, Ghetto Superstar and Lady Marmalade. Sadly her run in Chicago is limited--she is scheduled to join the musical at the Ambassador Theatre for nine weeks only, May 12-July 13. Fans of the movie version of Chicago might have caught a glance of Mya on the big screen as she had a small role in the Oscar-winning flick.

I just received an invitation to New York from a friend of mine from high school and am seriously considering taking her up on it. As such I have been scouring the Internet researching Broadway shows (after all, you can't visit New York without taking in a show or two) and was pleasantly surprised to see that tickets are still available for many of my favorites.

In my next blog I will give you the low down on some of Broadways most popular musicals and plays and let you know whether tickets are still available for late spring and early summer performances.
