Travel Tidbits: The Merry Month of May... Maybeby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 01 May 2008 03:54 PM HAWAII May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii. And this year visitors to the 50th State were given a chance to help the Islands make history. A call out was sent to hotels on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu asking tourists to team up with locals to help create the world's longest lei. Thousands gathered at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki today to string together a flower garland that stretched for more than a mile. When all was said and done the lei measured 5,336 feet in length and video, photos and witness statements documenting the project will be sent to Guinness World Records. Honolulu's mayor is expected to announce within a few weeks whether the record is official. ILLINOIS An update now on a story I blogged about a few months ago regarding comical placards placed under stops signs in Oak Lawn, Illinois. According to news reports, the Illinois Department of Transportation determined the signs violated the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The signs were part of a public safety campaign aimed at cutting down on speeding through stop signs. Slogans such as "and smell the roses" and "means that you aren't moving" were placed near 50 stop signs throughout the city. Back in September the city's mayor said he thought the remarks would get motorists to pause, if for nothing else, to read the phrases. Unfortunately, workers were forced to remove the signs because if they were left up the city could have lost federally funded projects. According to the mayor, the loss of the signs cost the city $1,700. NEW HAMPSHIRE For one driver in Manchester, New Hampshire May started off with a real bang. According to police, heads turned today when a car pulled into the parking lot of a local grocery store with a "No Parking" sign and post stuck to its front end. A clerk from the store called the cops and when officers arrived they found a sleeping driver inside. A 23-year-old Manchester woman was reportedly arrested, and officers are still trying to figure out where she hit the sign. Related Articles: Sunday Travel Funnies: WHOAAA!
