Touring Ireland

When I was a young girl I dreamed of honeymooning in Ireland. Since my dad is part Irish I thought it would be interesting to learn more about my heritage and from what I know about the Emerald Isle its beauty is unparalleled. So I figured why not explore the gorgeous countryside with the man that I was destined to spend the rest of my life with. Those were the musing of a young child and needless to say I didn't honeymoon in Ireland, but I haven't given up on the dream. Some day I plan to travel to the "Celtic Tiger," but until then I am left to browse the tour packages that are offered from season to season.

I recently found one that really intrigued me. It's operated by Irish Folk Tours and is called the "Folktales and History Tour." The program costs $55 per person and includes a meal and fees to all attractions in Dublin. This particular tour touts itself as ideal for those of Irish heritage who want a window into how their ancestors lived. What makes this tour different from traditional tours is that instead of visiting the country's historic attractions and being presented with stories of famous revolutionaries, authors, and politicians, this tour offers tales from common people from whom most Irish immigrants descended.

The "Folktales and History Tour" includes an evening with Johnny Daly, an authority on Irish storytelling and folklore. Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from May through October, Daly offers an evening of storytelling and Irish cuisine in The Brazen Head, Ireland's oldest pub. Tour participants converge over a four-course candlelit traditional Irish meal, where Daly tells stories of how ordinary Irish people lived in the past, including their superstitions about fairies and other mystical beings.

According to the tour pamphlet: "There's nothing like a good meal and good stories to make you feel like you've really been somewhere." Frankly, I agree. The pamphlet doesn't say how long the storytelling session lasts, but it does say that when Daly is done sharing his tales you are able to watch traditional music being played in the pub downstairs.
