Save on a Mid-Summer Getaway

Forget about the fact that Wal-Mart and Target erected their school supply displays before the last firework exploded on the 4th of July.  Take a look at the calendar and you will see that there are more than six weeks of summer vacation left before most kids head back to class. For many families, that leaves plenty of time to get in another trip or two before the end of the season.  In fact, if you’ve waited this long to take flight on a summer vacation you stand to save a pretty penny.  According to travel insiders, late August is … Continue reading

We’re Putting in a Garden!

Yesterday was the first day that it actually felt like spring here in Pennsylvania. The daffodils actually bloomed, and we could walk around without our heavy coats and sweatshirts and sweaters. I parked the car in the driveway, in the sun, and got it cleaned out while my youngest and I waited for the kindergarten bus. All very nice, but the biggest development came later. After work, my husband started planning out a garden. Planning out a garden is something that he and I have been talking about for a while. Growing some of our own produce is a great … Continue reading

Parking Spot Costs $640,000

What better way to encourage the use of public transportation than to making the cost of parking outrageous! That is the case in Hong Kong, where land, no matter how small, is a great commodity. CEO Jacinto Tong has a piece of prime real estate in Hong Kong – a parking spot. Yes, it is only 8-feet-by16-feet, but this slab of concrete comes at a hefty price – $640,000. That is about $5,000 per square foot. Tong says it is the best parking spot he’s ever had – he only has to walk 20 steps to the elevator. And, he … Continue reading

Paying the Price for In-Flight Food

Forget about sky-high luggage fees and consider the priceless commodity you risk when you take flight these days—your health. Most travelers are quick to calculate airfare, hotel accommodations, rental cars and souvenir expenses, but neglect to factor in the toll eating overpriced airline food may have on their health. According to a new survey, most airlines don’t offer food items that do a body good; though, some are better than others. According to the poll featuring 10 North American airlines, Air Canada and Virgin America top the list of healthiest in-flight food. Both carriers scored high marks for their healthy, … Continue reading

Flying the Not-So Friendly Skies

What is it with families and flying these days? And by flying I mean getting booted from airplanes. Barely a day goes by anymore without some innocent clan getting the heave-ho from a commercial flight due to a perceived threat made by a child. However, the latest incident doesn’t involve a screaming baby, a chatty toddler or a hungry infant; rather, a California family claims they were kicked off an American Airlines flight simply because their 16-year-old son has Down syndrome. Joan and Robert Vanderhorst, of Bakersfield, California, are irate by what they are calling “pure discrimination.” “It’s defamation,” Robert … Continue reading

Another One Bites the Dust

Kids seem to be getting kicked off planes left and right these days. What is it with commercial carriers and fussy tots, anyway? The latest victim: A cranky 3-year-old and his parents. According to news reports, last Sunday, a screaming toddler was booted off an Alaska Airlines flight departing from Seattle. The incident enraged the boy’s father, who claims the airline overreacted. “Kids crying, people snoring, large, smelly people, we deal with it, it’s normal,” said Mark Yanchak. Yanchak told reporters that his son was being a little fussy while the family prepared for their flight to depart. “He was … Continue reading

Congress Passes Another Extension on the Payroll Tax

Congress has managed to work together and to pass legislation that extends the payroll tax cut. This is about more than the payroll tax, however. It also affects the Medicare reimbursement rate for doctors, and unemployment insurance benefits for people who haven’t been able to find employment. This is not the first extension that Congress has passed regarding the Medicare reimbursement cut, the payroll tax, and the length of unemployment insurance benefits. There was a last minute extension that happened right before Christmas of 2011. At that time, the Senate had passed an extension for those things, and the House … Continue reading

Historic Prudential Building in Houston has been Demolished

The historic Prudential building, which was located in Houston, Texas, has been demolished. The location where it once stood is going to hold a new building, and possibly a park. It is always interesting to watch a video of a controlled demolition. At the same time, it is sad to see historic buildings reduced to dust. Prudential is an insurance company that has been around for more than 135 years. The company’s mission is to help their customers “achieve financial prosperity and peace of mind”. This is the company that, for years, used the phrase: “Get a piece of the … Continue reading

Fungus Eats A House – SafeCo Insurance Won’t Cover It

This might be the absolute strangest homeowners insurance claim that I have ever heard of! A rare form of fungus devoured a house that was located in California. The couple who owned it filed a claim to their insurance company. At first, SafeCo said they would cover it, but, after the repairs were made, SafeCo pretty much changed its mind about that. There is a strange fungus that actually can eat wood. It is called Poria incrassata, and it is triggered by water. This fungus is voracious and is quite capable of devouring an entire house a short amount of … Continue reading
