Road Trip Reminders

It’s that time of year again… Time to see just how much you can squeeze into the family minivan before it begins to sag in the middle. Time to see how far you can get before a child calls out: “Are we there yet?” And time to see how just how many miles exist between McDonald’s locations when you are cruising through Pittsburgh. Ah, yes, the family summer road trip of 2007… surely it will be one to remember (or at least one that will include events that will be hard to forget). Before you head out on the highways … Continue reading

A “Vacation Carpool” (Or How I Saved Our Family’s Summer Road Trip)

Last night it hit me… an absolutely brilliant idea that would help save our family’s summer road trip. (Like many families, we all but cancelled our trip after gas prices hit three dollars.) So, here’s my mega-watt plan: A “Vacation Carpool!” It may sound crazy, but allow me to explain. Most of us are familiar with the concept of carpooling. Basically, it’s a shared ride between people traveling to the same destination (be it work, a child’s soccer practice or birthday party). With a “Vacation Carpool” you would travel to a specified destination in a shared vehicle with people you … Continue reading

Spring Break Travel Tips

My college co-ed cousins go on spring break next week. (They will be sunning it up in a tropical location while I sit here shedding tears on my fading tan.) Typically, college students make up round one of the revolving door of spring breakers who collectively crowd the nation’s highways, beaches, and skies this time of year. If you plan to spend the spring recess journeying to sunny (or snowy) destinations on a much-needed family vacation, consider keeping some of my favorite tips in mind: Do Your Homework. Does anyone dare enter the Magic Kingdom without a plan? Don’t answer … Continue reading

Traveling With Young Children: Dos and Don’ts

We just returned from spending the last few weeks traveling with a two-year-old and 6 month-old. We took a multi-family vacation to multiple Hawaiian Islands (I have family living on four of the five major Hawaiian Islands). It was a wonderful adventure that gave me the chance to practice some of the travel lessons I’ve learned on past trips. Here are some of my favorite dos and don’ts to follow when traveling with young children: DO understand the value of distraction, distraction, distraction! Bring along lots of toys and plan on introducing them to your child one at a time—typically, … Continue reading

Summer Heat and Your Car

The mercury hit 90 degrees in Wisconsin Saturday. Though it felt more like 150 degrees in my car. There is nothing I dread more than exiting an air-conditioned grocery store and climbing into a vehicle that has been baking in the mid-afternoon heat. It got me thinking about the effect this blistering heat can have on a car and what could happen if you are on the road when trouble strikes. It is no surprise that during the summertime one of the top three causes of vehicle breakdowns is overheating. To avoid having this inconvenience put a damper on your … Continue reading

Let’s Keep Passion Alive

What is more valuable to a married couple than any other currency? The emotional and intellectual wisdom of how to keep their intimacy alive decades after they have said I do. Couples need good coping mechanisms to handle the stresses of life without straining their marriage. They need to be able to overcome the periods of disillusionment and yet remain committed to their lives together and provide mutual support as well as maintaining their passion and romance. Couples can do this by incorporating the following four ideas into their daily lives and rituals with regard to their marriage and their … Continue reading

Marriage & Love; Love & Marriage

Sometimes we forget that love and marriage both take work. When we are engaged to be married and planning our wedding ceremony, we think the sky is the limit. We know if we aim for the moon, even if we miss – we’ll still be among the stars. We understand, above all else, that we love each other. This is a thought that we need to remember, because that love can sustain us in the best of times and the worst of times. The following is a bit of a personal glimpse, but it was the best way I knew … Continue reading
