Do You Check Your Receipts

Cashiers hate it, but I do it right in front of them. I monitor everything they scan or ring up, then I step aside after paying and read over my receipts one more time. At least 50% of the time, especially when I have a large order, I find an error on my receipts. Nine times out of ten the error is in the store’s favor. While checking the receipts is imperative in a grocery store, it is even more important when you are in clothing stores and even buying single items. I can’t tell you how many times a … Continue reading

New York City–A Biker’s Paradise?

New York City… honored for bike friendliness? I thought I had heard wrong, or perhaps, the guy on the news had made an error. However, upon further viewing I realized that someone (actually, an entire group of legitimate someones) really believes that the concrete jungle with its convey of yelling yellow cab drivers, take no prisoner pedestrians, and hordes of hassled truck drivers is a premiere place to travel on two wheels. Believe it or not, the League of American Bicyclists just awarded New York City a medal for bike friendliness. Okay, it’s a bronze medal, but considering it ranked … Continue reading

More Sunday Travel Funnies

Here’s a travel dilemma for you. After years living on the East Coast you and your spouse are retiring and moving to Arizona, but you have adorable pet cats and wouldn’t dare have them travel cross country in an airliner cargo hold. How do you get to your new home? You could make the 2,400-mile journey by car… but, wait, as life long New Yorkers you don’t have a license. Now what? You do what every other New Yorker does to get around—hail a cab. It’s sounds like a joke, but for Bob and Betty Matas it’s the real deal. … Continue reading

Subway Stories

My cousin celebrated his 25th birthday in New York City last night. (He lives on Long Island so the excitement surrounding the event wasn’t derived from the location.) As you can imagine it was a late night and he ended up riding the subway to a friend’s home in Queens. When I spoke to him earlier today he was desperately trying to find his iPod. From what he can remember, it was still in his jacket pocket when he boarded the subway last night. But, this morning it was gone. Losing your iPod on a New York City subway… please! … Continue reading

Taxis With TVs—Not A Bad Way To Travel

Let’s face it; New York City cabs (and their drivers) don’t exactly have the world’s best reputation. But, that could soon be changing. According to the city’s Taxi & Limousine Commission a new generation of taxis could be hitting the streets the Big Apple within two weeks. The revamped cabs will be sporting TVs, but, they’re not just your ordinary monitors, these TVs are designed to help riders pass the time, pay the fare and even find their lost items from bags to umbrellas. The taxi commission showed off the new and improved cabs to the media yesterday. The updated … Continue reading
