You know things are awry in the travel world when you can fly to Italy for less than it costs to jet off to Hawaii from New York. I subscribe to several online travel sites and keep in close contact with a number of travel agents and this week both announced amazing air and hotel packages to popular Italian cities such as Florence, Venice and Rome for unbelievably affordable prices.

Take a look:

FLORENCE

For a mere $1,039 you can jet off to fabulous Florence this fall. Virgin Vacations is offering the trip to the picturesque crown of Tuscany, for fall departures between September 8 and October 25. The price covers round-trip airfare from New York and four-nights lodging at modest properties, such as Palazzuolo Hotel, located in the city's historic center. Daily continental breakfast is also included.

ROME

Not only will you get the chance to roam Rome on this adventure, but you also get to take in the sights and sounds of Florence and Venice as well. European Destinations is offering an amazing deal for September departures, starting at just $1,089 for a six-night package to Rome, Florence and Venice. The package price includes round-trip air from New York, hotel accommodation for two nights in each city, daily breakfast and Eurostar rail tickets between the cities.

TUSCANY

Foodies will be delighted to save dough on their next trip to Tuscany and Umbria. Foreign Independent Tours is offering an eight-day wine and food lovers' tour of the two cities for just $2,199. The price covers airfare from New York, lodging, car rental, meals, and tours. You'll spend three nights at hilltop Villa Il Patriarca near Sienna and three nights in deluxe Relais Ducale in the historic town of Gubbio (both properties include breakfast daily). The package also features guided visits to the wine cellars of the Renaissance town of Montepulciano; a tour of Gubbio; a trip to an Umbrian chocolate factory; two wine tastings; and two dinners.
