Taking a Trip to Galveston

Galveston, Texas is a wonderful place for a family vacation or couples who enjoy the beach, shopping, visiting historical homes, and other fascinating activities. We took a trip to Galveston a few years back and found it to be a charming city with great people. One of our first stops was to Moody Gardens, which includes a 10-story Rainforest Pyramid, complete with a tropical environment. One of the main features of the rainforest is the largest collection of bats in the southwest.

In addition, Moody Gardens had an IMAX 3D, which provided an experience that seemed so realistic. Then, we headed to Palm Beach, a white sandy beach and blue lagoon, something the kids really enjoyed. However, the Discovery Pyramid was probably the favorite. There, a number of interactive exhibits were available, all focusing on the exciting world of science. The other great attraction for the entire family was the 100,000 square foot exhibit of space called the Aquarium Pyramid.

We then headed over to Ashton Villa & Heritage Center, which was built in 1859. This place was loaded with all types of family heirlooms, antiques, and original pieces of artwork. This mansion was once the home to one of the richest Texan businesspersons of all time - James Moreau Brown. The Victorian style mansion provides an up-close experience of what it was like living a rich Victorian life. Best of all, admission into the mansion was very reasonable and the kids actually enjoyed it while learning a lot.

Our next stop was to the Strand District, which is located in downtown Galveston. While there, we found a wide variety of eclectic and retail stores, as well as museums and fabulous restaurants. While we did not get the chance to try out the nightlife, we heard the clubs were awesome. During the time we were there in February, we enjoyed Galveston's version of Mardi gras, which was simply spectacular.

Our final destination while in Galveston was to Steward Beach. Although it was a little too cold to swim, the children had a blast walking barefoot in the sand. They even spent time building sandcastles and when done, we headed over to the nearby McDonald's; I believe the highlight of the kid's vacation. Galveston was incredible and I cannot wait to go back.
