Sunday Travel Funnies: Granny Puts Pedal to the Metal and Pilots Ask for God’s Help to Land Safely

If you think senior citizens live life in the slow lane you haven’t met 96-year-old Edith Pittenger. The great-great-grandmother made history last week becoming the oldest driver to ever gun it around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Pittenger, an Indiana native, took the trip around the famous racetrack in a two-seater Dallara with driver Arie Luyendyk Jr. and reached speeds of nearly 200 mph. No, she’s not trying to become the next Danica Patrick; rather the ride was part of the Indy Racing Experience–a Christmas gift Pittenger received from her children. The anything but slow senior started attending the Indianapolis 500 … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: The Merry Month of May… Maybe

HAWAII May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii. And this year visitors to the 50th State were given a chance to help the Islands make history. A call out was sent to hotels on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu asking tourists to team up with locals to help create the world’s longest lei. Thousands gathered at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki today to string together a flower garland that stretched for more than a mile. When all was said and done the lei measured 5,336 feet in length and video, photos and witness statements documenting the project will be sent to … Continue reading

Sunny Travel Funnies—-Cross Country Crack-Ups

It’s been a while since I wrote my last installment of the Sunday Travel Funnies, but this week it’s back… with some major crack-ups. We begin in Jacksonville, Florida where a driver there caused an accident that would no doubt have Bill Cosby shaking his head. According to police, a truck driver narrowly escaped serious injury (he did sustain injuries but has since been released from the hospital) this week when his truck smashed into another vehicle and flipped over on a local highway spilling thousands of Jell-O snack packs on I-95. Police say the truck driver lost control of … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies: WHOAAA! A Two-Headed Turtle

After a brief hiatus the Sunday Travel Funnies are back! A ton of humorous travel tales have transpired since we’ve been away so let’s get right to it… WHOAAA! Look out for some laughs if you are traveling through Oak Lawn, Illinois. Apparently, for some motorists a big red stop sign is not enough to get them to apply the brakes. Which is why officials in the Chicago suburb recently installed additional signs beneath the traditional stop signs with messages that include “WHOAAA” or “Stop … and smell the roses.” Oak Lawn’s mayor says the idea is to get drivers … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies: “OUCH!”

Talk about feeling the pain at the pump… Well, not quite the gas pump, but the gas tank. That’s where an Alabama driver recently got his finger caught when he was trying to clear gunk from the opening of his gas tank. According to police reports, Dwight Clark says he was innocently trying to clean his truck’s gas tank when his finger went in past the knuckle and got lodged in the tank. According to rescue personnel, people had sprayed WD40 all over his hand, but that didn’t work. Now, here’s the part that gets me—Clark reportedly didn’t want rescue … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies: Why Did the Turtle Cross the Road?

Any guesses? Well, we’ll likely never know because the little critter didn’t quite finish his journey. But that didn’t stop him from creating a catastrophe in the process. Authorities in New Jersey say the reptile caused one heck of an accident on the Garden State Parkway a few days ago. According to police, a woman reportedly swerved to avoid hitting the turtle as it crawled across the northbound lanes of the busy expressway. In the process she lost control of her car, crashed through a guardrail and tumbled down an embankment before the car flipped over onto its roof. Luckily, … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies— “Don’t Worry, It’s ONLY A Safety Problem.”

How would you like to hear that upon boarding your flight and seeing nearly half the seats on your plane roped off? It’s no joke. According to news sources, the pilot of a Spanish air carrier told “nervous passengers” on his flight not to worry when they asked why all but three of the 32 rows on one side of the plane were taped off. A Spanish newspaper reports that the captain addressed the situation on the plane’s intercom system by reportedly saying: “We will not be able to use that part of the plane because we have a safety … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies—-Not Everyone Is Smiling

This week’s installment of “Sunday Travel Funnies” was inspired by an unexpected trip that a young man took when his electric wheelchair got lodged in the grille of a semi. I saw the story broadcast on TV while at a graduation party attended by more than three-dozen people. Reaction to incident was mixed. While some found it hilarious, others were less than amused. Read what transpired and judge for yourself. Some may call what happened to 21-year-old Ben Carpenter “exciting.” He calls it “pretty scary.” I’ll take his word for it. According to police reports, a few days ago Carpenter … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies—-So Weird You Have To Laugh

Some obnoxious guy I met at a rest area in Omaha once told me that traffic laws were made for other people. I thought about him when I heard about the man in Utah who insists: “Traffic laws are God’s laws” and takes it upon himself to enforce them. According to Utah police, a local Church of Christ minister has been on their radar screen for a while ever since officers received numerous complaints that he made a practice of jumping in front of fast cars in his neighborhood, sticking brooms in their way and backing his own car in … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies: Snakes, Shoes, and Swiss Cheese

It’s Sunday—-time for another dose of “Sunday Travel Funnies” an ongoing series we have going on here in the Travel Blog. This week one of my weaknesses is the subject of amusement—shoes. As for the other two items—-snakes and Swiss cheese, well, let’s just say I have never been a fan of slithery serpents and I’m lactose intolerant. But who said you have to love something to find it funny? SNAKES ON A PLANE Passengers on a recent flight from Egypt to Saudi Arabia may have thought they were on a real life version of “Snakes on a Plane.” According … Continue reading
