Summer LEGO Mania

My 8-year-old is a LEGO Friends fanatic. My dishwasher is not. I know this because of the horrible sounds it’s been making since swallowing one of the tiny plastic bricks meant to stabilize the slide on my daughter’s Heartlake City Pool set. I’m this close to tossing out the rest of the set and booking a trip to New York City.  That’s where Nathan Sawaya’s massive LEGO display is being showcased for kids of all ages to enjoy.  Perhaps, immersing my child in another LEGO lover’s colorful brick designs will take her mind off her mother’s moratorium on LEGO play. … Continue reading

Talk about middle child syndrome. And you thought the Duggar family had issues. Chloe Bunny was born smack in the middle of 10 older brothers and sisters and 10 younger ones. In McCarty’s latest literary venture, Daddy Bunny surprises his bustling brood with a new TV. The entire Bunny clan makes a beeline for the electronic entertainment option, save for Chloe and baby Bridget. Young Chloe is not … Continue reading

Where to Find a Celtic Fest This Summer

A Celtic fest has nothing at all to do with the football team that has a similarly spelled name. A Celtic fest is a gathering where you can find music, dancing, art, food, gifts, and genealogy related items that connect to Irish, Scottish, or Celtic culture or history. Here is a quick list of where to find some Celtic fests, (or Irish Fests, or Highland Fests), this Summer. In Itasca, Illinois, there will be a Scottish Festival and Highland Games held on June 15, 2012, and June 16, 2012. There will be traditional Scottish food, Scottish whiskey, and Scottish music … Continue reading

The High Price of Summer Vacation

Can you really afford to take a dream vacation this summer? In some parts of the country, kids are still in school and parents are busy crunching numbers to see if a family escape to the beach, mountains or theme park is financially feasible. Unfortunately, it seems the travel industry is working against frugal families this summer. Especially the ones who enjoy the mega thrills and chills found at popular amusement parks. Look at Universal Orlando. The Florida theme park just raised its single-day, single-park ticket price to $88. The park’s attractions may be friendly, but the price of admission … Continue reading

Prepping for Summer Holiday Travel

Memorial Day is the official kick-off to the busy summer travel season. However, surging gas prices don’t paint a pretty picture for families looking to hit the highway or take to the air to visit grandma while school is out. Fortunately, there are ways to save if you plan on making travel a top priority this summer. According to experts at Travelocity, despite insanely high fuel prices you can still find a decent deal on domestic flights if you book early. And by early experts mean now. The online agency claims that you can score reduced rates on airline fares … Continue reading

Summer in the City

Someone once told me that the only people you’ll find in New York during the summer are tourists. I don’t think he was joking. While the dog days of summer may drive the locals to the Hamptons and away from the concrete jungle, the season also ushers in a slew of visitors looking to get up close and personal with the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and the Empire State Building. Ditto for the “City of Brotherly Love,” where tens of thousands of tourists flock to see Ben Franklin and the Liberty Bell. Whereas the famous landmarks are worth touring, … Continue reading

Seductive Summer Shots

Summer’s sweltering temps often translate into a lot less clothing worn by people who should be wearing a lot more clothing. I recently got an email from my cousin in New York City, who felt compelled to share a disturbing image he snapped at a local pool. The photo attachment revealed a woman wearing a dental floss bikini bottom, which showed off her pierced upper rump. Personally, I found the photo to be incredibly revolting, but my cousin said that some of his friends found it intriguing, which just goes to show that a picture of a woman’s pierced coin … Continue reading
