Fun Spring Festivals for Families

The sun is shining (well, it is somewhere in the world), the temperatures are rising and the days are getting longer. Spring is definitely on its way. While the economy may be putting the brakes on your plans to jet off to see the tulips blossom in the Netherlands, the news is not all bad. You don’t have to spend your child’s spring break in front of the TV. Rather, gather the clan and soak up the sun and fresh air at one of the many family-friendly festivals taking place around the United States this spring. CALIFORNIA You don’t have … Continue reading

Fall Food Festivals—-Celebrating Okra

I grew up in Hilo, Hawaii… a place far removed from the region of the country where okra thrives. Yet, I love the fuzzy green veggie. All thanks to my Texas-born best friend. My pal Erika was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas, but moved to Hawaii when she was 12 and her professor parents accepted jobs teaching at our local university. Erika’s family moved in down the street from me and we became fast friends. Which means I shared many meals at her home. Hence, my introduction to okra. The slimy green pod vegetable was a staple in Erika’s … Continue reading

Family Travel: Taking Your Children To A Strawberry Farm

I was going to title this blog “A Trip To The Strawberry Farm—A Parent’s Survival Guide,” but I didn’t want to send the wrong message. Yesterday my 3-year-old daughter and I finished off the last two pieces of a very tasty strawberry rhubarb pie. It was a pie we made together with the fresh strawberries we picked earlier this summer at our local berry farm. (I froze a few pounds and have been adding them to recipes throughout the summer.) Nothing says summer than fresh strawberries, right? That was my thinking about two months ago when I loaded my daughter … Continue reading

More Summer Festivals In The “Land Of Lincoln”

Looking back at my previous blogs listing dozens of family friendly festivals taking place this summer in the Midwest you might think that all I do on vacation is eat. Yes, food is at the center of many summer festivals, but as this blog will illustrate there are tons of events, which feature much more than just corn, strawberries, or ribs. Here now are more extremely family friendly festivals taking place this month in and around the “Land of Lincoln.” Ethnic Arts Festival. This art fair features more than 125 artists representing 80 cultures. It also features music, food and … Continue reading

Parkesdale Farm Market Strawberry Shortcake

As many of you know, I just came back from Florida on vacation with my family. Of course you can look forward to lots of restaurant reviews because if there’s anything that Delps know how to do well–we know how to find good food! So today, I present you with the first of such blogs. . .a tale of our adventure to the Parkesdale Farm Market to sample their world famous strawberry shortcake. Plant City (also home of the Florida Strawberry Festival) is about 45 minutes away from Orlando. That’s right folks! My in-laws were so convinced that this was … Continue reading

Affordable Family-Friendly Festivals

You’ve heard it echoed in neighborhoods, playgroups, offices, grocery stores, even in the doctor’s waiting room. Seems like you just can’t escape “it.” “It” is the insanely high price of gas and nowadays, it’s the topic of conversation wherever you go. Ironically, it was a topic brought up last weekend during a mini-road trip my family took to attend a local Kite Festival. Ironic, because like many families, the skyrocketing price of gas has forced us to eliminate our “big” summer road trip. Instead, we have opted to save gas (and money) by attending a variety of area festivals that … Continue reading

Festive Fourth Fun

If you don’t own festive Fourth of July clothing, then you haven’t been to Old Navy this month. Walking into the popular chain store is like being swallowed by a giant Patriotic Fruit Pizza. Red, white and blue shirts, shorts and sandals with bits of Americana emblazoned on them are everywhere. What’s more, Old Navy is running a Buy Two; Get the Third Item Free sale all weekend long, so if you are still in need of Independence Day-themed gear to wear to fun-filled Fourth of July festivals, parades or parties, you know where to shop. Of course, dressing up … Continue reading

Low Fat Sugary Treats

I don’t know why, but my sweet tooth comes out in full force during the summer months. Maybe it’s the thought of ice cream treats or simply the gut instinct that watermelon doesn’t cut it as the “official” dessert of a meal. (Watermelon is more like a ‘pre-dessert’.) But I do know that if I ate all of the sugar I wanted I would be approaching a summer swimsuit of grand proportions. (Think: Emmett Otter’s grandmother’s bathing suit.) In any case, it’s in that vein that I offer you two delicious summer time treats that will not cause you to … Continue reading

Family Travel—-What You Can Learn at an Apple Orchard

We just returned from our annual trip to the local apple orchard and I’m staring at the receipt from our adventure. My 3-year-old daughter spent more than an hour happily bouncing from branch to branch plucking ripe red apples and placing them into her plastic bag. (This was after I convinced her that the farmer might ask us to leave if she continued to throw rotten apples into the nearby buffalo pen.) Gazing at my receipt it appears the hands on lesson in produce growing and harvesting was included in the price of the apples. The apples at the U-Pick … Continue reading

Going (Coco) NUTS In Hawaii

It’s the only food festival in the world where I don’t walk away 5 pounds heavier. If it were not for the fact that I am allergic to the hearty fruit I would eat everything in sight at Kauai’s Coconut Festival. Believe me (I was born and raised in Hawaii); if you find yourself in the “Aloha State” during the month of October this is one event you don’t want to miss. The 11th annual Kauai Coconut Festival takes place this year on October 6th and 7th at Kapaa Beach Park on the lush eastern portion of the Hawaiian Island … Continue reading
