Historical Pups: Lewis & Clark’s Dog Seaman

Today the dogs and I had a breakfast invitation. We drove up to St. Helens, Oregon, a cute little town just north and west of Portland on the Columbia River. My friends Ken and Jen have a house with a fenced yard there, and they always welcome my dogs with open arms. After breakfast, we took a walk down to the waterfront. There’s a cute park in front of City Hall with a winding path made from tiles. Many of the tiles have quotes from the actual travel diaries Lewis and Clark wrote when they were making their way west. … Continue reading

St. Louis Side Trips

You’ve done The Arch and toured the riverboats, so what else does St. Louis have to offer? If you love the great outdoors and are up for a family adventure consider heading out to these other local hotspots near “Mound City.” Meramec Caverns Located about an hour southwest of St. Louis in Stanton, Missouri is a place known to many as the infamous hideout where Jesse James and his brother, Frank would count their loot after their latest bank or train heist. Killer Heat

Summer is finally here. The season of sun, sand and surf officially arrived just after 6 p.m. Central time, making June 20th the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Many families celebrated the summer solstice with picnics, bonfires, and trips to the beach. Goodness knows they had ideal weather for their outdoor adventures. Currently, much of the country is baking under a mini heat wave. Today’s high in our neck of the woods reached a sizzling 94 degrees. Throughout the Midwest and along the East Coast, Mother Nature showed little mercy, frying those who ventured outdoors in … Continue reading

The Ultimate Children’s Museum

My five-year-old has been to more than a dozen children’s museums in her short life. She’s loved every one of them, but apparently, she doesn’t know what she’s been missing. According to a recent survey, the City Museum, located in St. Louis, Missouri, is the ultimate children’s museum. In addition to having a second-floor, 13,500 square foot aquatic waterworld where kids of all ages can get up-close and personal with more than 10,000 sea creatures (from sharks to stingrays, and seahorses), the museum also boasts a five-story jungle gym with two real-life jets that kids can climb on. There’s also … Continue reading

Travel Guides: Are They Worth It?

I am a huge advocate of travel guides. Though being that I am a relentless organizer and planner this is no surprise. I am also a member of AAA so stocking up on travel guides is easy since I can get them for free (or at least as a part of my annual membership fee). This doesn’t mean I carry a travel guide whenever I leave my home, but I do consult one whenever I am traveling to a place I am unfamiliar with. AAA’s travel guides are very helpful when it comes to finding the best lodgings available, but … Continue reading

Top Reasons to Visit Branson, Missouri

I’ve traveled to Missouri dozens of times (in college I dated a guy who attended Drury University) and while I’ve visited some of the “Show Me State’s” most popular attractions I was still a bit taken aback by a recent statistic that made headlines regarding Branson, Missouri. The family-friendly Ozark resort town, which is known for its country music roots, attracted more than 8 million visitors to the area last year alone. So what’s the draw? I’ve compiled this list of reasons why people from around the world are putting Branson at the top of their must-visit lists: Affordable. Branson … Continue reading
