Off-Season Savings

Reset your season and save. Shopping against the season for goods and services is one of the best ways to save on practically everything. Why? Because when other people aren’t spending money on certain items or services, companies need to up the incentives to generate interest. One big example of seasonal savings is on travel. You’ll pay a lot less for travel in the off-peak seasons. For example, you can pay up to 80 percent higher for accommodations at Disney World during the Easter or Spring season as you will during the value or off-peak season. This makes sense since … Continue reading

Fun Ideas for a Spring Staycation this Year

For some families, spring break is almost here.  Having a week or two off from school is the ultimate idea of fun for many kids, but for moms and dads the seasonal vacation can be dreadful, especially if money is tight. Fortunately, you don’t have to drop thousands of dollars to make your child’s spring break memorable.  With the price of gas hitting record highs, millions of families are opting to stay close to home this season.  The idea of taking a staycation is even more tempting when you consider how much money you can save while still having … Continue reading

Exploring the High Seas with Kids

In a previous blog I detailed some of the extraordinary amenities offered to families on Disney Cruise Lines’ ships. In addition to being able to dine with Mickey and crew at sea, the company also provides a feature that’s exclusive to their vessels. It’s called a rotating dining system and it allows pint-sized passengers and their parents to can change restaurants every night, but keep the same servers and tablemates. Unlike its competitors Disney Cruise Lines also offers a bath and a half in most staterooms. This is a huge bonus when you are traveling with young kids. The bathtub … Continue reading

Spring Break on the High Seas

Given the recent string of cruise line disasters, you’d think that you’d be able to snag a hefty money-saving offer by a major carrier right about now. Well, think again. I checked, and no luck. Cruising with my child is at the top of my bucket list and I figured I would dig around a bit to see if we could score a last-minute deal on a spring break sailing. While there are some deals out there, none of them coincide with my daughter’s break from school. What’s more, in most cases, flights to the cruise’s departure city cost more … Continue reading

Playing it Safe During Spring Break

This morning the Today show ran a piece on college co-eds prepping to go crazy on Spring Break in Cancun, Mexico. The report focused on an American student who was brutally attacked while he lounged poolside at his Mexican hotel. Basically, it raised the issue of spring break, foreign travel and safety. Personally, Mexico is not exactly at the top of my family’s spring break destination list. You know, drug cartels and all. Of course, if you are not careful you can get hurt visiting your local children’s museum, though I doubt the injuries would be caused by masked men … Continue reading

Sin City Spring Break

I was in high school when MTV debuted its first-ever foray into spring break mayhem complete with beer-bonging and half-naked college coeds dangling from stripper poles on Daytona Beach. In the 25 years since, the cable network has visited practically every spring break hot spot from Mexico to the Caribbean. This year MTV decided to bring its seasonal debauchery to Las Vegas where it would go largely unnoticed by the usual acts of hedonism that take place there. Sin City survived MTV’s madness which included five days of live concerts, wet t-shirt contests, boozing and babe oogling. The party just … Continue reading

Countdown to Spring Break

This winter has been especially brutal for residents living in the Midwest and along the East Coast of the United States. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures have been the norm this season as storm after storm has raced across the country making travel a nightmare from coast-to-coast. You bet we are ready for a break… a hot, sunny, snow-free spring break. When I was in college typically the rule for vacations was: “Go home for winter break. Go wild for spring break.” Basically, it meant you would spend winter recess with family in your respective home state and party with … Continue reading

Fun for Kids on the High Seas

Pint-sized SpongeBob SquarePants fans don’t have to travel to a pineapple under the sea to get up close and personal with their favorite Nickelodeon character. Thanks to Norwegian Cruise Line, kids can have a blast with SpongeBob and the rest of his watery friends while floating on the open sea. Earlier this month the cruise line announced that it will be partnering with Nickelodeon to bring SpongeBob and other well-known Nickelodeon characters to at least two of its ships in time for Spring Break 2010. The first Nick and Friends cruise will depart in April on the Norwegian Jewel. It … Continue reading

Spring Into Spring with an Outdoor Workout

With the weather warming up (at least in some places), you might consider moving your fitness routine outdoors. Whether it’s a bike ride around the neighborhood or a hike at your favorite state park, the opportunities to burn calories in the great outdoors are seemingly endless. If you enjoy soaking up the scenery while you sweat, then consider signing up for one of the following outdoor races being offered across the country this spring: April 4th–Pole Pedal Paddle (Jackson, Wyoming). Enjoy the Tetons as a backdrop for this skiing, biking and boating race. April 16-19–Sea Otter Classic. A biking competition … Continue reading

Spring Break Fun

Personally, I would never consider taking a spring vacation to a ski resort, but that’s mainly because I am surrounded by snow and cold for roughly eight months of the year. For other families (like my brother’s) an ideal spring break consists of hitting the slopes and snowshoeing along finely groomed trails. If you are looking to take a ski vacation this spring, consider the following options in beautiful Utah. SNOWBIRD RESORT This resort offers full-service slope-side luxury lodgings suitable for serious skiers and snowboarders, as well as beginners. The resort is known for its extreme slopes, but also features … Continue reading
