Barbie Ban—Yea or Nay?

A West Virginia lawmaker recently introduced legislation calling for a ban on Barbie dolls in the Mountain State. The pretty, plastic blonde is an icon in the toy world, yet her legendary status hasn’t stopped Lincoln County Delegate, Jeff Eldridge from wanting her to disappear from his neck of the woods. If Eldridge gets his way Barbie will be banned from West Virginia store shelves. Oh, and Eldridge says parents will thank him for it. “I just hate the image that we give to our kids that if you’re beautiful, you’re beautiful and you don’t have to be smart and … Continue reading

Sleeping With Barbie

I’ve written about the real-life Barbie Malibu Dream House, but now fans of the iconic blonde Jill of all trades have another travel destination to add to their summer vacation list: the Barbie Suite in Las Vegas. The Palms Casino Resort, known for its Fantasy Tower, which features mega-suites that include bowling lanes, basketball courts and indoor swimming pools, is now home to a Barbie wonderland. The hotel’s newest addition, dubbed the Barbie Suite, is 2,350-square-feet of pure girly fun. In addition to a sprawling pink bedroom, complete with a princess bed decked out in pink satin sheets and powdery … Continue reading

Great A Skin Graft

I am still having problems with my reconstruction one side won’t close all the way and I was going back into surgery for another attempt at closing it. This is beginning to be ridiculous a surgery a month is crazy. I am ready to get this part behind me. Unfortunately this closer did not work either so our last option is a skin graft to close it. Great more scars. The surgeon decided that he needs to remove a section of skin of about 7 inches on the inside of the right arm. I really don’t understand needing such a … Continue reading

What About the Princes, Pt. 2

On Monday I introduced the concept that the stereotypical images presented by the leading men in Disney films might have a harmful impact on young boys’ growing ideals. I suggested that many of the main male characters in Disney films are one-dimensional and teach boys that good looks and martial prowess are essential facets of the ideal man. We need to look at the overall image the Disney princes/men present to young boys. Most of them are princes, and even those who aren’t are still handsome, dashing, and masterful in a fight. So that’s the sort of men boys think … Continue reading

Single Parenting: How to Feel Good Again (Or At Least Semi-Human)

Divorced or Widowed? There is no doubt that you are not feeling yourself these days. On some days it may even be hard to get out of bed. So why bother? I will tell you why. Walk through your house. There are signs of life everywhere…scattered toys, little cups, action figures, Barbie dolls. Go into the bedrooms and see your sleeping children. That is why you must do it. Toys in Bed

I was talking with a friend, a first-time parent who has a preschooler and she was lamenting about the most recent troublesome development–now that her child is in a “big boy bed”–he is bringing all sorts of his toys into bed with him and falling asleep amidst the big pile. She is concerned it is not only a health and safety concern, but that he is developing bad habits. I hated to seem like that saucy and crusty old mother who couldn’t be fazed, but I have a nearly 18-year-old who STILL likes to have all her books, papers, and … Continue reading

Is it Time to Upgrade Your Child’s Room?

Is your child living in a room that is too “young” for her? Maybe there are shelves of toys that haven’t been touched in months, a closet full of clothes that are outgrown and out of fashion, or your son is still sleeping on “Toy Story” sheets and he’s a busy middle-schooler. Kids grow and change so fast, sometimes it’s tough to keep up. Maybe it’s time for an upgrade and a little redecorating in your child’s or children’s room(s)… One of the fun things about kids growing up is that in some ways, we parents get to change with … Continue reading

Aussie Slanguage. An English Language Lesson from Down Under.

English is a hard language to learn. There are many words that sound the same, but are spelt differently and have different meanings, like “here” and “hear” or “bye” and “buy”. Depending on where you live in the world, the English words you use to describe something can be different too; like sweet and lollie. Thank goodness I grew up speaking English and have not had to learn it as a second language. I think I would have failed because it is too hard for me to work it all out sometimes! Australian English is a great example of speakers … Continue reading
