Casino Owner Strikes Again

The Las Vegas casino owner has stepped up again to help the needy. This is in addition to the recent anonymous $2 million gift to the United Way of Southern Nevada. In the past few months, 4,000 southern Nevada families have each received anonymous gifts of $500 each. For one man, LeRoy Stapleton, it meant gas money to help him go out and look for a job and provided hope of preventing homelessness. The first gifts started as $500 gift cards at Christmas 2011, but this past Saturday, 2,000 more families received the $500. A lot of the families who … Continue reading

Spring Break on the High Seas

Given the recent string of cruise line disasters, you’d think that you’d be able to snag a hefty money-saving offer by a major carrier right about now. Well, think again. I checked, and no luck. Cruising with my child is at the top of my bucket list and I figured I would dig around a bit to see if we could score a last-minute deal on a spring break sailing. While there are some deals out there, none of them coincide with my daughter’s break from school. What’s more, in most cases, flights to the cruise’s departure city cost more … Continue reading

Spring Forward

With the price of gas soaring like a bar-headed goose on the loose, you might consider sticking closer to home this spring break. Of course, hanging around in your own neck of the woods doesn’t have to be a death sentence. After all, the United States offers a slew of exciting travel attractions during the first season of the year that your entire family will love attending. For example: Chicago: During the city’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration the local plumber’s union dyes the Chicago River green. The event is followed by the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade through Grant Park. … Continue reading

Spring Getaway at Sea

Watching video of the doomed Costa Concordia after the ship ran aground off the coast of Italy doesn’t exactly make one want to rush out and book a spring cruise. The maritime disaster has resulted in 16 confirmed deaths. In addition, 16 other crew members and passengers are still missing. Despite the horrific tragedy, cruise experts maintain that setting sail on an upcoming spring or summer voyage is perfectly safe. What’s more, they point to a number of enticing benefits you can enjoy on a floating resort, including: Amenities: Modern-day cruise ships are akin to floating cities. They include everything … Continue reading

Spring Break Through Your Camera’s Lens

After the 19.8 inches of new snow that fell on our city yesterday I’m not surprised that there is a mass exodus going on right now. Who wants to spend spring break digging out from nearly two feet of wet, heavy, sloppy snow? Many of our friends are heading to sunny destinations this weekend. Two families are driving to Florida where they plan to scuba dive and swim with dolphins. I begged them to take photos of their underwater adventures. They laughed and said they’d pay for the resort’s staff to snap their pics. Not for nothing, but it doesn’t … Continue reading

Outdoor Spring Adventures

My daughter is dying to head outdoors and break in her new Razor scooter. She was fortunate to spend the month of January in Hawaii where she could scoot outside to her heart’s content (while giving my dad a heart attack in the process), but now she’s back to reality, dealing with the snow and cold that blankets the state of Wisconsin from October to June. Spring is officially here, though you’d never know it by stepping outside and feeling the chokehold Mother Nature has on our state. Still, if you are looking for ways to make the most of … Continue reading

Super Savings on Spring Break Travel

Ordinarily, I would never consider spending spring break in Sin City, but when money talks, I listen. In this case, Spirit Airlines is doing the speaking with unbelievably low fares from Los Angeles to Vegas. How low is the discount carrier going to fill planes on its new route: try $9. Less than ten bucks to get to and from L.A. and Vegas—jaw dropping! Of course, after you add in taxes and fees the sale price goes up to $39 for a round-trip ticket, but still, that’s a lot less than it would cost to fill up your car and … Continue reading

Sin City Spring Break

I was in high school when MTV debuted its first-ever foray into spring break mayhem complete with beer-bonging and half-naked college coeds dangling from stripper poles on Daytona Beach. In the 25 years since, the cable network has visited practically every spring break hot spot from Mexico to the Caribbean. This year MTV decided to bring its seasonal debauchery to Las Vegas where it would go largely unnoticed by the usual acts of hedonism that take place there. Sin City survived MTV’s madness which included five days of live concerts, wet t-shirt contests, boozing and babe oogling. The party just … Continue reading
