Relationships 101 – Happy Anniversary Marriage Blog

We here at the marriage blog offer our insights and experiences with relationships, marriage and more – so you might look at us as a version of relationships 101. So let’s talk about what you might want to see here as covered by relationships. Marriage Counseling You might want to see articles on marriage counseling and what problems couples can sort out there. Articles on marriage counseling should also talk about what you need to look for in a counselor. … Continue reading

Teen Anxiety Linked to Parent-Infant Relationship

Parents want the very best for their baby. They put a great deal of effort into understanding what their baby needs and making sure that he or she gets it. Things change a bit when a child turns into a teenager and becomes difficult. Now, many parents are bewildered by the behaviors they see in their teen. When did the teenager become so nervous? It turns out that the quality of the parent-infant relationship is linked to teen anxiety. A study was done that involved 165 European-American children. These kids were from middle to upper-middle-class families. Each child was recruited … Continue reading

Opposite Sex Friendships: Playing with Fire

I’ll warn you ahead of time.  You may not agree with anything I have to say in this blog.  In fact, you might think I’m living in the dark ages…but that’s okay. The issue I’m talking about today is friendships with the opposite sex.  But please understand ahead of time that I am coming at this from the angle of seeing the destruction it almost cost my marriage and the fact I have been married for 21 ½ years. My opinion is that having a friendship with someone of the opposite sex is playing with fire.  Think about how many … Continue reading

Signs of an Unhealthy Dating Relationship

One of the more challenging issues that parents have to deal with in raising teenagers is dating.  Ideally this is something your family discusses long before the time arrives. There are a couple of reasons this is important.  The first is that expectations are known ahead of time and can be clearly explained.  The second reason is that you can begin planting this information into your teen’s mind, before they start dating.  This avoids surprises. At the same time, be ready to make adjustments along the way.  I really thought I had it set in stone what the “rules” were … Continue reading

Iowa Will Have a State-Federal Partnership Exchange

Part of the Affordable Care Act requires that all states have a health insurance exchange. The deadline for states that wanted to have a state-based exchange has passed. The Governor of Iowa, Terry Branstad, has declared that Iowa will pursue a state-federal partnership health insurance exchange. Every state is required to have a health insurance exchange. In 2014, individuals and small businesses will use the exchange to find affordable health insurance. There were three potential options for the way that a state’s health insurance exchange could be. One option was to create a state-based exchange. The deadline for that option … Continue reading

The Difference Between Friendship and Marriage

Sometimes I wonder what the difference is between friendship and marriage.  Not casual friendship, or even good friendship, but really-close, best-friends, rely-on-each-other-for-everything friendship.  If we look to the media for answers, it seems to imply that the only difference is physical desire.  In movies and television, the only or at least primary distinguishable change in the relationship between two characters that are best friends, and then become something more, is that their relationship adds a sexual element. Those are usually my favorite types of stories (as opposed to ones where the characters aren’t friends but jump right to dating), only … Continue reading

The Importance of Grandparent Relationships

My grandparents got home from Australia this week. They have been serving an LDS mission in Brisbane, Australia over the last two years and we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to pick them up from the airport on Monday. Logan was only two when they left. He frequently talked with them on Skype, but that was his only real memory of them up to this point. He warmed up quickly during the ride home, but what impressed me so much was the fact that the moment they walked off the plane my grandmother was already taking advantage of … Continue reading

Shipping Your Christmas Gifts for Free

I love shopping online for Christmas gift because it is so convenient. I can do my research, shop at different stores, find all of the deals and never have to deal with cranky kids and crowded stores. Well, at least if the kids get cranky, I can give them a snack and send them down to the playroom, something I can’t so when I shop at the actual retail stores. There is one thing that I don’t like about buying Christmas gifts online and that is the shipping costs that may be associated with them. Of course there are ways … Continue reading

Weddings And Kinship Terms Part 1 – There Are No Cousins In Law

Last week, my sister got married. It was an incredible event, complete with a sunset cruise on a beautiful schooner. I am very happy for my sister and her husband, and I really enjoyed visiting with them and meeting his family for the first time. As is the case with any wedding, the uniting of two families brings about family history related discussion aplenty. One discussion that I remember has to do with kinship terms, more specifically how the two totally adorable ring bearers are now related as a result of the wedding. One of the ring bearers is my … Continue reading
