Rated as the largest national forest in the state of California, Shasta Trinity is a wonderful vacation destination for people who appreciate the great outdoors. The mountain range varies from 1,000 to more than 14,000 feet, which provides visitors with nice diversity of landscapes. Covering more than two million acres, this particular national forest offers five distinct wilderness areas, as well as literally hundreds of mountain lakes, and more than 6,000 miles of streams and rivers. The wilderness areas include the Yolla Bolly Middle Eel, Trinity Alps, Castle Crags, Chanchellulla, and of course, the famous Mount Shasta.

While spending time in the Shasta Trinity National Forest, you will have the opportunity to see many wildlife habitats up close. A scenic river runs directly through the national forest with a 154-mile section running east and west. In addition, the forest offers 365 miles of shoreline where you can swim, fish, or boat. Off the shoreline are a number of inlets and arms that include McCloud, Squaw Creek and Pit, and Sacramento. Each is beautiful in its own right with tons of history.

Now, if you make your way up to the 7,300-mile range, you can spend time on Little Mt. Hoffman. From there, you will be offered the most spectacular view of Mount Shasta, as well as Mount McLoughlin and Mount Lassen. Another great vantage point is from the Tulelake Basin to the north. From there, you will have an amazing, 360-degree view of some of the state's most beloved scenery. In fact, the entire lookout area has been completely restored, now offering overnight stays at a wonderful retreat.

Other favorite activities while visiting the Shasta Trinity National Forest are mountain climbing, horseback riding, backpacking, camping, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and of course, snowmobiling. With so many great trails, you do not have to be an avid outdoors person to enjoy. For this reason, people of all ages and lifestyles come to this California national forest just to kick back and relax.

While there, you want to visit the Whiskeytown Shasta Trinity National Recreation Area, which covers more than 200,000 acres. This area is comprised of three regions to include Whiskeytown, Shasta, and Trinity, thus the name. Again, you can enjoy any number of outdoor activities, along with renting paddleboats or larger watercraft. In addition, many people love this area for off-road trips and hunting. Of course, you would want to make sure you have the proper permits for this. If you prefer, you can rent a houseboat and simply enjoy some leisurely time on the water.
