The AlamoSan Antonio is a hotbed of history lessons. The site of the famous Battle of the Alamo, a major fight in the battle for Texas independence, the city has preserved many of the locales for tours. The Alamo itself, located at 300 Alamo Plaza in downtown San Antonio, is open year-round (except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) for tours, field trips, and family vacations. Visitors to the Alamo learn all about the stunning tenacity of Sam Houston, James Bowie, Davie Crockett, and the other brave defenders of Texas as they fought against General Santa Anna and his powerful army. Although the "Texians" were ultimately defeated by Santa Anna at the Alamo, the mission still stands as a proud monument of determination and courage. The battle cry "Remember the Alamo!" helped fuel the troops towards a later victory at San Jacinto. Most kids enjoy learning about our nation's history, and the Alamo provides a rich learning experience. There is also a church on the mission grounds. Today the small church houses many mementoes of the Texas defenders, including a Bowie knife and Davie Crockett's vest. Of particular interest to most children is the Long Barrack Museum. Among other things, the museum shows a film about the Battle of the Alamo. Kids also enjoy the cannons on display in the Cavalry Courtyard. A major plus for families-- admission is free, although donations and gift shop purchases are appreciated. El MercadoTexas was once a part of Mexico, and a trip to El Mercado will convince you that it still is! El Mercado, or Market Square, is located at 514 Commerce. Set up as an authentic Mexican marketplace, El Mercado is a delight to all of the senses. Colorful mariachi bands entertain as roadside vendors sell interesting Mexican-themed souvenirs. No matter how many times we go, we always buy at least one mariachi puppet! If you are lucky enough to visit El Mercado while a percussion band is playing, be sure to stop and watch. Those guys and gals are amazing! Authentic Mexican food, such as tortas and gorditas, is also available-- no Tex-Mex here! Since the plaza is wide open, kids are free to run and play, dance and sing.
