College basketball survived Kentucky, but can you survive spending spring break in the “Bluegrass State”? Popular to contrary belief, Kentucky is not only for sports fans. The state is filled with natural wonders, historical landmarks and quirky travel attractions. Exploring all of Kentucky’s recreational opportunities may be a bit much if you are planning to stay for just a week; however, that shouldn’t stop you from soaking up as much of the surroundings as possible. Summer in the City

Someone once told me that the only people you’ll find in New York during the summer are tourists. I don’t think he was joking. While the dog days of summer may drive the locals to the Hamptons and away from the concrete jungle, the season also ushers in a slew of visitors looking to get up close and personal with the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and the Empire State Building. Ditto for the “City of Brotherly Love,” where tens of thousands of tourists flock to see Ben Franklin and the Liberty Bell. Whereas the famous landmarks are worth touring, … Continue reading

Adventures by Disney: Urban History

The time has arrived for my final look at Adventures by Disney. It’s fitting that today’s blog features a vacation that takes its guests to Disneyland, among other more urban and historical retreats throughout the United States. To my surprise, there are currently no Adventures by Disney trips to either Disney World or to New York City. I could have sworn that AbD at least went to the latter some point, but for whatever reason that’s not on the table this year. Instead, AbD’s East Coast tour focuses on colonial history, with an 8-day 7-night Mid-Atlantic Family Vacation. Or as … Continue reading

Unthinkable

It’s easy to see why parenting and paranoia go hand in hand. Between bullying, natural disasters, stranger danger, and suicide, parents have a lot to contend with when it comes to protecting their offspring from the world’s perils. However, just when you thought you’ve reached your capacity for worrying, along comes yet another reason to fret. The latest concern for parents with young children: being diagnosed with cancer… just nine days after your spouse is given the same news. It seems unthinkable, right? Wrong. Just ask Nathan and Elisa Bond, who made headlines recently when they were both diagnosed with … Continue reading

March Into St. Patrick’s Day

Traveling to a spectacular St. Patrick’s Day parade doesn’t require a ton of effort on my part since I live near a city that is home to one of the best of the best. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been celebrating St. Paddy’s Day with marching bands and crowds of revelers since March 17, 1843. The event predates Milwaukee’s incorporation as a city and the statehood of Wisconsin. This year the parade takes place on Saturday, March 12th at high noon in downtown Milwaukee. The event gets underway in front of the Shops of Grand Avenue on 3rd and Wisconsin, and proceeds … Continue reading

Have a Merry New York Christmas

It’s been nearly eight years since I posed in front of New York’s most famous Christmas tree. The towering Rockefeller Center Christmas tree serves as a seasonal centerpiece in the Big Apple during the holidays, but it’s just one of many, many highlights you will experience if you decide to spend December in NYC. Other must-visit holiday-themed attractions include: Soak in spectacular views of the city from 70 stories up at 30 Rock’s Top of the Rock observation deck. Kick your holiday season into gear by taking in a magical Christmas performance at Radio City Music Hall. Remember the true … Continue reading

How Safe is Your City?

I am a sucker for lists. For some reason I can’t resist scanning “Best of” or “Worst of” lists, be it a column itemizing the “World’s Best Ice Cream” or the “Worst Movies of 2009.” So when Men’s Health magazine recently published its list on the “100 Safest American Cities for Kids,” I was drawn to it like mold to moisture. Love the list… and not just because my family lives near the safest city in the United States (according the magazine). Love it because my family spends a ton of time in the top TWO safest cities in the … Continue reading

Live Like Eloise

Pinky-pink, frou-frou loving girly girls have a new dream vacation destination: New York City. The city that never sleeps is the new home to a princess palace straight from the pages of Kay Thompson’s classic book “Eloise.” The flighty fictional literary heroine regularly turns the landmark Plaza Hotel upside down with her crazy antics, and now your little girl can do the same. Well, kind of. The Plaza Hotel just opened a suite created in Eloise’s honor with help from popular fashion designer Betsey Johnson. Eccentric Johnson let loose when creating the whimsical suite that costs $995 a night to … Continue reading
