Jewel’s Unconventional Wedding and Matthew’s Unique Parenting

They finally did it! After more than 10 years together Jewel and her rodeo champion boyfriend Ty Murray are officially husband and wife. According to reports, the award-winning singer and her longtime boyfriend got hitched in a private ceremony in the Bahamas last night. Jewel’s rep confirms that she wore “a traditional wedding gown, while Ty wore his favorite blue jeans, white shirt and cowboy hat.” The singer’s rep also added that the ceremony was not attended by anyone but the minister who married the couple. Interestingly, the pair never formally announced an engagement, though they have been sharing a … Continue reading

What a Hairball Looks Like

It looks a lot like poop, doesn’t it? For the first six years of living with Mr. Meow, every time I found one of these piles I thought he’d had an upset belly and hadn’t made it to the litter box in time. It wasn’t until 2005 that I learned what it really was: a hairball. “That’s a hairball?” In 2005, shortly after we moved to Nashville, the neighbor across the street befriended us. Her little boy loved Murphy and always begged her to stop by so he could say hi. Usually in the afternoons after they came back from … Continue reading

Flying on a Private Jet

Did you happen to see Thursday night’s season finale of “The Celebrity Apprentice?” If you did then you know that when it came time to get his famous friends from Nashville to New York for a charity auction country music star Trace Adkins chartered two private jets for them to travel in. Cha-ching! I’m not sure how much Adkins ultimately raised for his charity, but you have to figure that the money he dropped on the private jets likely totaled in the ballpark of the funds he raised. Despite the astronomical price tag (think $50,000 per person in some cases) … Continue reading

Where To Go To Visit a Flying Saucer House Before It Takes Off

You can’t miss it. The eye-catching home, located on a twisting road leading to Chattanooga’s Signal Mountain, has been attracting gawkers from around the world since it first “landed” there in 1970. The mountainside house is built to resemble a flying saucer and was inspired by the original “Star Trek” series. The circular structure, which was considered ultramodern when it was built nearly four decades ago, is ringed with small square windows and directional lights and perched on six “landing gear” legs. It has multiple levels, three bedrooms, two baths and an entrance staircase that retracts with the push of … Continue reading

Murphy’s Pick for Best Dog Park

This past Thanksgiving we drove to Denver like we did two years ago for Christmas. Murphy was the first one out the door and to the car when we asked, “Want to go to Grandma Dorothy’s house again?” Boy did he! Not only does his Grandma Dorothy live literally on the edge of Cherry Creek State Park (which means a park walk everyday, a couple times a day), but she lives five minutes from the best dog park Murph’s ever been to. It’s also part of Cherry Creek State Park and it’s just off Parker Road. I don’t know what … Continue reading

Country Music News: Hank Thompson Dies, Roseanne Cash Has Brain Surgery

Country music lost another legend this week so soon after losing Porter Wagoner. Singer and bandleader Hank Thompson died late Tuesday of lung cancer at his home in Keller, TX. He was 82. His last show was in Waco, TX on October 8th. Texas Governor Rick Perry and Waco Mayor Virginia DuPuy officially named that day “Hank Thompson Day.” Thompson death came quickly as it was just days ago that he cancelled his remaining tour dates and announced he was retiring from the music business. Thompson had twenty-nine Top 10 hits starting in 1948 and stretching all the way through … Continue reading

Wagoner has Lung Cancer and Kid Rock Arrested…Again

It was revealed today that country legend Porter Wagoner has lung cancer. I had blogged a couple of days ago that he was in a Nashville hospital in serious condition, but his publicist has not said why he was hospitalized. He did get a visit from his country music protégé Dolly Parton earlier this week. Dolly and Porter have had an on again off again relationship since he took her under his wing in 1967. They performed together as duet partners for several years before, after several disagreements, Dolly decided to strike out on her own. She wrote her #1 … Continue reading

Traveling To Tennessee

In 1996 I was driving alone from Wisconsin to Atlanta, Georgia. I had just gotten a job field producing and reporting for a news agency that was documenting the Summer Olympics from start to finish. I was thrilled about my new gig, but far less enthused about making the long drive with all of my belongings by myself. Regardless, the road trip proved to be quite eventful and extremely educational. It was on this trip that I would experience what life was like in Tennessee (if only for a couple of days). My first visit to the state was brief … Continue reading
