Mini Mickey: The Ultimate Disney World Travel Guide

Learn how to avoid the crowds This weekend my family and I engaged in an activity along with many others across the country: raiding the clearance sales at Borders. I’m devastated at the mega-bookstore’s demise, but that didn’t stop me from seeing what books I could obtain. Before I made a separate trip to the store with my mother, she gifted me with three books she’d bought there earlier in the day (thanks, Mom!) They’re all unofficial guides to Disney World. Between them the three contain myriad tips on taking a Disney vacation: how to find the best savings, how … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits For Special Needs Travelers

There’s nothing more relaxing than retreating to the woods for some R&R. Especially when a cool breeze sweeps over you as you gaze at a colorful vista of wildflowers bordered by deep green vegetation. Our country’s park system gives us the opportunity to soak in all that nature has to offer, but what if you are wheelchair bound? How do you navigate the windy trails that lace up and down areas such as Vermont’s picturesque Green Mountains? These days it is much easier. A specialized trail there makes the park’s picture-perfect settings much easier to access for visitors with physical … Continue reading

Travelers Score in Denver

And you thought China was the only place you could find a polite cab driver these days. Etiquette 101 has moved to Denver, Colorado… just in time for the Democratic National Convention. The political extravaganza kicks off in the Mile-High City on August 25th and the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau is doing everything it can to spruce up the place before millions of visitors converge on the area. As the clock ticks down to the start of the convention the tourism group is madly trying to complete training of more than 2,500 taxi drivers, front-desk hotel employees, restaurant … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: What Not to Pack Inside a Suitcase and What to Order at a Hotel

Note to travelers: Don’t try this one on your next trip. With the skyrocketing cost of airfare, plus a slew of new (and outrageous) service fees I’m surprised someone hadn’t tried this months ago. Sure, it really is a dumb idea, but I bet it will make you chuckle. Swedish airport officials were less than amused when they found a dwarf trying to stowaway on an airplane inside of a suitcase. The prank was short-lived as the entire scene was staged by a TV comedy show. Still, that didn’t stop employees at Bromma airport from calling police when the dwarf … Continue reading

Luxury Travel—-Private Jet Vacations

Imagine not having to deal with the hassle of luggage fees or wondering if you’ll miss your connecting flight because of weather delays. Those are just a couple of the perks associated with private jet travel. While most of us can only dream of indulging in such a luxury there are some who exclusively fly via private plane. They are the ones who don’t need to look for private jet travel bargains. However, if you have been saving up to splurge on a once in a lifetime trip you might consider the following private jet package deals. Right now TCS … Continue reading

No More Horsing Around in Rome

Horses in New York’s Central Park are not the only ones animal rights activists are looking to save. Passionate horse lovers in Italy want visitors to use other means of transportation to tour famous landmarks in Rome other than horse-drawn carriages. A strong contingency of animal activists are trying to ban the use of horse drawn carriages saying traffic, pollution, heat and heavy loads expose the animals to health risks. According to one animal rights association, about 90 horses are employed in Rome to carry tourists to see the city’s landmarks (such as the Colosseum) on busy streets full of … Continue reading

Summer Travel Tidbits: Roadkill, Reckless Driving and Record High Gas Prices

ROADKILL If you are planning to drive along Illinois highways this summer don’t expect the views to be very pleasant. Unless you enjoy staring at miles and miles of roadkill, you will likely find the drive somewhat… well… gross. According to the state’s transportation department, it simply doesn’t have enough money to pick up as much roadkill as it normally does this time of year because it spent too much of its budget during the winter months. Representatives from IDOT say they spent more than twice the allotted $40 million to clear ice and snow during last winter’s severe storms … Continue reading

Traveling with Your Pet: Fabulous Food Finds Part 2

According to the latest National Pet Owners Survey taken by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, 63% of U.S. households, or 71.1 million homes, own a pet. The survey also found that that 19% of dog owners and 3% of cat owners take their four-legged friends with them when they plan to be away from home for at least two nights. What’s more, AAA lists more than 13,000 lodgings throughout North America, which offer pet accommodations. And we’re not just talking about beds for Fido to flop on. Dozens of hotels across the nation are catering to cats and dogs … Continue reading

Traveling with Your Pet: Fabulous Food Finds

Who says pet owners are the only ones with discriminating taste? You’ve heard of hotels catering to gourmet travelers, but what happens when those foodies want to bring Fido and Fifi along for the ride? Thanks to clever marketing managers an increasing number of hotels throughout North America and Europe have created in-house gourmet menus fit for a royal pet. For example, if you are traveling with your favorite shaggy friend to Arizona you might consider staying at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix where for $11 Fifi can feast on Zen, a hearty vegetable stir-fry with poached … Continue reading

Summer Travel Tidbits—In Search of Slopes, Surf and Suitcase Rebates

SKI/SURF And here I thought the Big Island of Hawaii was the only place in the United States where you could surf and ski in the same afternoon. Travelers to Kellogg, Idaho know better. Last weekend visitors to the city’s newest addition—-the Silver Rapids Indoor Waterpark–had the rare opportunity to ski and surf when the end of the ski season (June 1st) overlapped with the opening of surf season (May 30th). Okay, it’s not quite as natural as the ski and surf option Hawaii offers, but Idaho’s version was big enough to make headlines in that neck of the woods. … Continue reading
