So you've taken your kids to the National Aquarium, and walked over to the Maryland Science Center and Camden Yards. Don't retire to your hotel room just yet. Baltimore has a host of other family-friendly attractions that are worth staying up for.

Fort McHenry

The star shaped fortress turned museum is a must-see attraction in the Baltimore area. Especially given its place in American history. Fort McHenry is where Francis Scott Key watched the British attack Baltimore during the War of 1812. It was that experience that inspired him to write The Star-Spangled Banner. The museum is overflowing with hands-on history lessons for kids (and adults) and offers several outstanding scenic spots where you can gaze out at the Baltimore Harbor and contemplate what transpired on the hallowed grounds centuries ago. The museum is open every day except Christmas and New Year's Day. Flag ceremonies take place daily at 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for visitors over 16.

American Visionary Art Museum

Who better to turn a family vacation into an opportunity for learning than dear ol' dad and mom. If you are looking to infuse your family's trip with some educational experiences I would highly recommend stopping by the American Visionary Art Museum. Located at the base of Federal Hill, this new national museum and education center is home to dozens of original works of art created by self-taught artists. The facility boasts seven art galleries, an outdoor wildflower sculpture garden and, my personal favorite, the Joy America gourmet restaurant. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $9.

Baltimore Museum of Art

One of the city's most popular attractions is the world-renowned Baltimore Museum of Art. Most visitors come to gaze at the Cone Collection of Modern Art, which includes works by Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, Degas, Cezanne and van Gogh. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults and free for kids under 18. Admission is also free from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. the first Thursday of every month.
