More End of the Summer Travel Destinations

Where have you gone this summer? Did you finally take that family trip to Hawaii or were you able to scrape up enough cash to jet off to Europe? With the economy in a slump many families have opted to stay closer to home this summer and it has paid off. You needn't take a long flight or drive 300 miles to have the vacation of a lifetime; rather if you live near popular tourist attractions you can simply make the most of what's in your own backyard.

Miami, Florida

The ritzy neighborhoods on the north end of Miami Beach are great places to do some celebrity watching... and gawking at the likes of Matt Damon, Donald Trump and Gloria Estefan (all of whom own homes in the area) won't cost you a dime. You can also hobnob with the rich and famous at Bal Harbour's upscale open-air mall on Collins Avenue, home of heavyweights such as Chanel and Hermès. The money you saved by sticking close to home can be spent on services offered at the dozens of spas that line the streets of downtown Miami Beach. Indulge in a body polish to make your skin soft, a classic French facial to make your face glow, or enjoy an indulgent four-hand massage.

Denver, Colorado

Ski season is over, which means lower rates are yours for the taking during the last weeks of summer. The Mile-High City is home to dozens of fabulous ski resorts that provide access to breathtaking views and a variety of outdoor activities. Don't miss out on the Colorado Trail or Mount Falcon Park, which can be explored by foot or bike. For families with adrenaline junkie kids consider rock climbing and rappelling at Rocky Mountain National Park, about 70 miles northwest of Denver. The area is home to 60 mountains higher than 12,000 feet making adventure easy to find.

Chicago, Illinois

The Windy City is a traveler's paradise. The family friendly destination has something for everyone. You can shop the Magnificent Mile, tour some of the world's most famous museums (the Art Institute of Chicago is home to an amazing collection of American art, including "American Gothic" by Grant Wood and a number of works by Edward Hopper) or stroll through the much talked abut Millennium Park (home of the "Cloud Gate" sculpture). For sports fans, the Cubs play at Wrigley Field until fall. And no trip to the area is complete without a Chicago-style hot dog, loaded with toppings such as chopped tomatoes, onions, peppers and pickles.
