Minneapolis' Must-See Attractions

In a previous blog I wrote about the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis. In the wake of the tragedy many visitors have been forced to amend their travel plans to the Twin Cities. According to officials, for at least the next 15 months, drivers will have to find alternate routes to get to and from the city and the northern suburbs. Despite the fact that it will be a challenge (and a frustration) for most travelers, it doesn't take away from the vibrancy of the Twin Cities. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area has so much to offer visitors (besides the Mall of America). The following are some of our family's favorite stops in the Twin Cities:

Fort Snelling

If you are looking for a hands on history lesson, add Fort Snelling to the top of your list. Located near the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, it was constructed in 1825 and served as a frontier outpost for 30 years. During World War II, soldiers learned to speak Japanese and received other training here. These days you can find role-playing soldiers re-enact historical events, and as an added bonus your family can take part in various military drills. In addition, you can participate in numerous arts-and-craft projects offered on the grounds. There is also a public beach on the property where you can picnic or swim when the weather permits.

Depot Water Park

It's not everyday you can say that you got the chance to swim in a historic train depot. But, you'll do just that when you visit Depot Water Park. The attraction sits in the former home of an 1899 train depot located on Third Avenue in Minneapolis. Your kids will scream with delight as they glide down a 185-foot water slide. Meanwhile, you can soak in a hot tub or cool off in one of the splash fountains. The Water Park is open Thursday through Sunday, and a day pass is $20. My tip: book a room at the Residence Inn by Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott (located within the Depot complex) and you can get in to the Water Park for free.

Midtown Global Market

I first heard about the Midtown Global Market on the Food Network and instantly knew I had to visit. I wasn't disappointed. If you have an adventurous palate I would suggest making the trip yourself. After all, where else can you sample Himalayan dumplings, Mexican wedding cake cookies, Somalian pastries, Scandinavian candies, Middle Eastern cheese and olives, Asian noodles, and fresh bison meat all under the same roof It's like taking a culinary tour around the world without ever having to leave the Midwest. In addition to the food vendors, the market is also home to gift shops and cultural displays. The market is housed in the Sears building located at the corner of Lake Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis.
