Island Paradise New England Style

Because I grew up in Hawaii I spend a considerable amount of time writing about my island home. However, I realize that many residents who call the East Coast of the United States home also share bragging rights to another island paradise—one that few travelers ever step foot on. Cuttyhunk, Massachusetts (located about an hour from New Bedford, Massachusetts) sits on the part of the Elizabeth Islands chain, which stretches out from Woods Hole on Cape Cod. It may not be covered with palm trees and boast tropical trade winds, but the views from the beach are as stunning as … Continue reading

Fabulous Fall Color Excursions

My bucket list contains a ton of high-flying adventures (and even more non-stop food binges), including taking a hot air balloon ride to view nature’s magnificent color show in Asheville, North Carolina. The area is a Mecca for leaf peepers, but instead of viewing the awe-inspiring burnt oranges, golden yellows and fire-engine red leaves from the ground, I would love to get a bird’s-eye-view of the Pisgah National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains from 500 to 2,000 feet in the sky. Of course, hot air balloon rides are not the only unique ways you can view fall’s spectacular colors. … Continue reading

Now is the time to soak up all this spectacular color, here and just about anywhere in the Continental U.S., so what are you waiting for? Tis the Season for Leaf Peeping

This time of year a war brews between states over which offers the best views of fall’s fabulous foliage. Here in the Upper Midwest, Michigan boasts that its colors are far more vivid than Wisconsin’s. Likewise, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are constantly at odds over which New England town sports the most impressive autumnal glow. Then, there’s North Carolina, home to the world-famous Blue Ridge Mountains, which explode into a rainbow of orange, red and yellow this time of year. According to die-hard leaf peepers, there is no better place to view fall’s spectacular color show than in Asheville, … Continue reading

Cranberry Madness In Massachusetts

Did you know 27% of the world’s cranberries come from Massachusetts? It’s not exactly the best-known statistic around, but it’s a fact residents of the state are proud of nonetheless. The cranberry industry is Massachusetts’ number one agricultural crop, according to the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association. What’s more, leaders of the growers association maintain that Massachusetts is where the cranberry industry was born. Which means if you plan to visit the area during harvest season you are in for a real treat. In the early autumn months the New England state best known for its ties to American history … Continue reading

Presidential Chili

Make that Presidential Hopeful Chili. Presidential hopeful Barack Obama just wrapped up a weeklong vacation to his boyhood hometown of Honolulu, Hawaii and while he was in paradise he dined on a local favorite—-Hawaiian-style chili. Not once, but twice, according to news reports. I don’t blame the U.S. Senator from Illinois. Like Obama I was born and raised in Hawaii and it’s no secret that the Islands are home to some of the best chili in the world. (And unlike here in the Midwest fast food chains don’t yank the hearty dish from its menus during the summer months.) What … Continue reading

End of the Summer Travel Destinations

Your child’s first assignment of the new school year is to write an essay on what he or she did this summer. So what material does he or she have to draw on? Where have you ventured to this summer? A family vacation doesn’t have to break the bank if you plan accordingly. To save money take the short drive to visit some of the more … Continue reading

Missing Pyramid and Lighthouse Found

Now, I can understand losing your glasses, your car keys, or your purse. But, how can you “lose” something as big as a pyramid or a lighthouse? Well, let me tell you these stories, which broke this week in the news. First, the story of the missing lighthouse. Historians in Cape Cod thought that a 30-foot lighthouse that had once overlooked Wellfleet Harbor had been taken down and destroyed in 1925. However, this week, the lighthouse was found – in California! The lighthouse was “found’ last year by lighthouse researcher, but the discovery of it was just published this month … Continue reading

The Unlucky and the Stupid

Most people would think they had it made if they won the lottery. Timothy Elliott probably thought the same thing when he bought a $10 ticket at a Hyannis supermarket that netted him $1 million in the $800 Million Spectacular game. There was only one problem – Timothy was a convicted felon. In October 2006, Timothy pleaded guilty to unarmed robbery of a Cape Cod bank. He was placed on five year’s probation, but unfortunately, for Timothy, he didn’t read the fine print. The terms of his probation state that he “may not gamble, purchase lottery tickets, or visit an … Continue reading
