Is Your Daughter Afraid of Spiders?

The word “scared” doesn’t even come close to describing my preschool daughter’s fear of spiders. “Petrified,” “terror-stricken,” and “alarmed” don’t do her anxiety justice either. It’s nearly impossible to describe in a single word what happens when my otherwise fearless daughter catches sight of eight long black legs scuttling across the floor. Simply put, she freaks out. She screams as though someone was ripping out her hair with his or her bare hands. She can’t (or won’t) run away because she is paralyzed with fear, and she has a hard time uttering anything more than “sp-sp-sp-sp-iiiiiiiiiiiii-DER!” in between huge gasps … Continue reading

Are Your Kids Afraid of Fireworks?

How many of you plan to pack up the kids and head out to your city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show tonight? If you have a young child like mine, you might be considering an alternative plan. When my daughter was a toddler we did the whole Independence Day celebration u-rah-rah complete with a picnic at the local park, sparklers and patriotic attire. If you live in a small community, then you know prime fireworks seats go fast. Fast, as in, if you don’t have your spot secured with police tape (or barbed wire), blankets and coolers, at least … Continue reading

What Are You Afraid Of?

Fears are something most of us struggle with. Some of our fears are irrational and we don’t understand where they came from or how to deal with them. It might be a fear of sudden death, heights, spiders, darkness, and mice as some people have mentioned in the forum. Others may have some root cause in childhood or past experiences e.g. a fear of water after nearly drowning. The Bible tells us ‘perfect love casts out fear,’ 1 John 4:18. If we trust in the Lord then we should be able to seek His help in dealing with those fears … Continue reading

Planning Your Babymoon

You may have heard the term “babymoon” and wonder what it means. Simply put, a babymoon is the period of time just after your new baby is born. A babymoon is similar, only it’s your new baby you will be bonding and enjoying alone time with. This is the first two weeks or so at home with your new baby. It’s a beautiful time for the parents and baby to get to know … Continue reading

When and What to Tell your Children about the Devil

After becoming a mom, I was eager to introduce my child to his Savior Jesus Christ. I knew what songs I’d sing to him and what I wanted to teach him about God’s love for us. I didn’t give much thought at that time to how I would tell him about the enemy of his soul he’d need to resist. Children who attend Sunday school regularly will likely learn about Satan in their class. They might hear about him through the story of Adam and Eve where Satan appeared as a serpent or from the story where Jesus was tempted. … Continue reading

Tips for Dealing with a Clingy Child

Just about every parent has a time when their child is clingy, some more than others are. I remember when my son started to go to daycare around age five months of age, he did not want to leave mom. At home, I constantly had to pick him up to keep him from crying. Unless he had someone giving him full attention, he wanted to be held. As you can imagine, this was exhausting yet, I did not want to be a bad mother. Remember that this type of behavior from a child is very common, even expected. In fact, … Continue reading

Traveling With Children—Learn From My Mistakes

I used to be one of those travelers who would see a mother and her screaming child in the boarding area of an airport and secretly hope they wouldn’t be seated near me on a crowded flight. Well, that’s not entirely true. What I was really hoping for was that they wouldn’t be on my flight at all. Fast-forward a few years–now I’m the one with the baby. I might be older and wiser than I was when I was single, but giving birth didn’t gift me with the power to read minds. Then again, I don’t have to be … Continue reading

Help Your Child Triumph Over Irrational Fears

Our family was visiting a botanical garden, and Kyle was very unhappy. As we walked through the trails between the trees and blossoming bushes, he covered his ears and squinted his eyes, sometimes humming to himself. “He’s afraid of bees,” his older brother informed me. I was somewhat surprised. I’d had an inkling he didn’t like bees, but now I was seeing the real depth of his fear. A couple times on our walk, for no apparent reason, Kyle would shriek and duck in horror, as if aliens were attacking. Sometimes I saw the culprit “bee” (several times it was … Continue reading

Let’s Go Fly a Kite!

Yea, this is a safety blog, why the heck am I talking about kites? Well, it started with a beautiful, sunny, windy Sunday and ended with four burnt fingers, two cut fingers, one just shy of needing stitches, and a LOT of antibacterial ointment, the good kind with the painkiller and some cool pirate bandages. Intrigued? I would be if I weren’t a writer with a right (dominant, for me) hand covered in skulls and crossbones (Girlchild wanted a pirate party last year and these were left over party favors), and aches. We went to fly the kite today. My … Continue reading
