Animal Folktales: The Greedy Monkey

There are many variations of this folktale out there… but this is the version I remember. Stories tend to grow and change and evolve as they are told — that’s part of the wonder of the oral tradition. A hunter set out a simple trap: a glass bottle filled halfway with berries. Along came a slender, graceful crane and a shaggy, playful monkey. They saw the bottle of berries and both wanted some. “Let me use my long beak to get the berries,” Crane said. She reached into the bottle and carefully pinched a berry in the tip of her … Continue reading

Flying Safe—-How to Protect Your Valuables at 35,000 Feet

Because I travel with a young child I often enjoy the luxury of boarding an airplane prior to my fellow economy class passengers. Consequently, I am treated to a solid 15 minutes (at least) of people watching. During that time I observe the creative methods travelers employ as they try to cram as many of their oversized carry-ons in overhead bins or underneath the seats in front of them. Airline Luggage Wars—-Can It Get Any Worse?

I’ve had my share of luggage horror stories (many of which I’ve shared on this site), but now I am bracing for what could prove to be a cataclysmic move by the airline industry in regards to checked bags. Recently, United Airlines announced that it would be making a major (and alarming) change in its checked baggage policy. Instead of being able to check in two bags for free, as … Continue reading

How To Get Your Precious Bottles Home From Vacation

Friends of ours just spent two weeks in California where they took a tour of Napa Valley. Naturally, they picked up a few bottles of their favorite wines to bring back home. Unfortunately, they learned the hard way that carry-on restrictions prohibit passengers from bringing cherished whites and reds onboard their flight. Their story got me thinking about the bottle of champagne I won onboard a flight from Chicago to Honolulu a few months ago. United Airlines runs a “Half Way To Hawaii” contest where passengers are asked to guess the exact time (down to the second) the flight would … Continue reading
