Hawaii Travel: Good News/Bad News

Let's start with the bad news...

In what will likely come as no surprise to avid travelers, Hawaii's go! airlines will soon be charging a $10 fee to passengers wanting to check a bag on interisland flights.

According to a statement released by Phoenix-based Mesa Air Group Inc., go!'s parent company, it is joining several other carriers by charging for checked bags.

The reason: (the standard) "need to find other sources of revenue to deal with a spike in fuel prices."

Is there any other reason these days?

The new fee will go into effect August 10th. However, passengers who bought tickets before July 10th will not be charged the new $10 fee. In addition, the carrier says it plans to reduce fees for checking a second bag, to $17 from a previously announced $25. That fee applies to passengers who purchased tickets on or after June 25th for travel on or after July 15th.

Now the good news...

If you have been researching unique ways you can spend your time while visiting the Big Island of Hawaii this next tidbit might be right up your alley.

Hula Kai, a sleek, 55-foot Technicraft power catamaran, which offers visitors the chance to explore Hawaii's pristine waters, is now offering a new way to navigate the ocean via their Sea Rockets program.

Sea Rockets are underwater propulsion vehicles designed for advanced snorkelers who want to get a closer look at marine life. The motorized devices enable guests aboard Hula Kai the opportunity to cover vast underwater areas in a short time and allow them to get up close with Hawaii's unique marine creatures including moray eels, octopus, triggerfish, yellow tang and eagle rays

All tours are guided and instruction is included with every tour. Minimum age is 18, and the cost is $50 per half-hour.
