Insurance Blog Week in Review – January 8-14, 2012

In a typical week, the Insurance blog at Families.com will have fourteen different articles appear on it. It can be easy to miss something that you really should read about. Every week, I do an Insurance Blog Week in Review, to help you “ketchup” about everything that has hit the blog in the past seven days. ACLU Fights Michigan Domestic Partner Health Insurance Ban Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed a law that bans public entities from providing health insurance coverage to the same-sex domestic partners of employees. The ACLU feels that this law serves no purpose except to discriminate against … Continue reading

Are You a Green Traveler?

Forget about toting burlap bags and recyclable water bottles to environmentally-friendly vacation spots, I talking about the basics: Do you think twice about leaving the lights on in your hotel room while you’re throwing back Cosmos during Happy Hour in the lobby? Do you spend an hour singing in the shower because you’re not paying for the water? Do you fall asleep with the television on, and then leave it on because you can’t find the remote and don’t want to get out of bed to look for it? Bottom line: How much do you really care about conserving water … Continue reading

On the Road (Part VI)

5:30PM We are off the toll road and we have about five hours to go. Now we just need to find a gas station … one that’s not too far off the highway. Gas stations seem to be more scarce now that we’re no longer paying to use the highway. Imagine that. Soon enough we spot one and stop to refuel hopefully for the last time during this long and arduous trip. 6:00PM Getting a little nauseated again. I’m not really enthralled with the idea of eating more sunflower seeds. My dear sister digs through the many brown paper and … Continue reading

On the Road (Part III)

7:30AM Our road trip has officially begun! I have been mentally preparing for this long trip for the last few months. Driving this fifteen hour all day excursion is never easy. I’ve only driven the whole thing myself when we moved down here five years ago. I made the same trip twice during my last pregnancy, I was even in my first trimester (6 weeks) for one of them, but I didn’t drive at all for that one. My biggest concern now is that I don’t get really nauseated or fatigued. We have plenty of high protein snacks with us … Continue reading

The Road to Super Bowl Fun

It’s been 13 long years since the Green Bay Packers played in a Super Bowl and now that the drought is over, residents in Wisconsin are ready to party like college co-eds on graduation day. I’m sure it’s the same way in Pittsburgh, but since I live in Packer Nation I can only speak of the craziness that has engulfed my neck of the woods. People have been planning Super Bowl parties since the minute the Green and Gold won the NFC Championship game in Chicago against the Bears. Stores are decked out in Packer colors and are offering everything … Continue reading

Green Burials – Part 1

I just never know where my next blog topic is going to come from. Today, I was listening to an achieved episode of the radio show “Coast to Coast” and they were talking to journalist Tom Jokinen. Jokinen went undercover as an apprentice at a mortuary in order to write his book “Curtains: Adventures of an Undertaking-in-Training.” Okay, all this may sound a bit morbid (actually, it was very interesting), but a topic was brought up that I never thought about – green burial. There are many reasons someone might want a green burial. First of all, there is the … Continue reading

Disney’s Plans to Broaden its Appeal

I’ve written a lot about the Disney Princess culture, and how it’s experienced some backlash lately. Though Disney makes truckloads of money off its Princess brand, it also takes a hit from the brand due to how alienating it supposedly is for boys. While Disney is in the midst of expanding its Princess line, adding a larger fairy tale section and brand new Pixie Hollow to the Magic Kingdom, it’s also got some elaborate plans to draw young male interest. Some of these plans are already in place. For a few years now the Hollywood Studios at Disney World has … Continue reading

More Green Innovations for the Homeless

I’ve blogged about Crossroads, the green from the ground up homeless shelter about to open in Oakland, Calif., and the groundbreaking Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax, Va. Today, I am going to tell you about the Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago, Ill. The Pacific Garden Mission has been in Chicago since 1877, but two years ago, a new, greener building was constructed to house the homeless. The new mission, which has 950 beds, has solar panels and low flow water fixtures. They used local materials to cut down on emissions and recycled their construction waste. Best of all, … Continue reading

Green Homeless Shelters – Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter

Yesterday, I blogged about Crossroads, a new green homeless shelter that is about to open in East Oakland, Calif. But, it was not the first homeless shelter certified green. The Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax, Va. opened August 4th of last year. The 16,931 square foot shelter was among the first to receive the Green Globes certification. The Green Globes certification is awarded to structures by the Green Building Initiative of Portland, Ore. The shelter, which can hold up to 20 families, offers an eco-friendly, safe, and secure environment where the families can stay while trying to get … Continue reading

Are You Going to the Winter Olympics?

T-minus 14 days until the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Vancouver, British Columbia, is getting ready to shine in the international spotlight, but I won’t be there. Will you? As a broadcast journalist, I had the incredible opportunity to cover the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. However, I’ve never attended the Winter Games. It’s a travel dream of mine that I don’t know when will come true. Still, the dream is alive for more than 500 athletes and coaches, almost 11,000 members of the media and nearly 350,000 visitors, who are expected to descend upon the stunning city on the … Continue reading
