Tips for Flying with Pets

Every time I fly somewhere I always swear I’m never going to do it again. It’s not so much being in the plane itself, but all the stress that comes with it: baggage check, connecting flights, delayed flights, etc. Attempting to cruise the skies with pets adds another major burden to the process. I have a friend here in Maryland who is a cat lover. She adores getting to cat-sit for friends. But she’s a British citizen who will be going home in a few years, and she won’t get a cat for herself until she does so. It’s all … Continue reading

Flying High with Fido

According to AAA, nearly 35 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. The auto club reveals that the number is slightly higher than a year ago, but less than the 35.3 million who hit the rails, skies and highways over Memorial Day in 2007 before the recession. AAA also reports that 30.9 million people will travel by car while nearly 3 million will take a commercial flight to their holiday weekend destination. If you are one of the millions planning to take to the air with your clan, you might think twice about … Continue reading

What to Know Before you Fly with Fido—Part 3

Now that you which airlines will allow your pampered pet to fly in style you should be aware of some of the restrictions that are associated with transporting animals on airplanes. Summer Travel If you are taking to the skies with Fido or Fifi during the summer months, it’s important to remember that most airlines have temperature restrictions in place during that time frame (May through September). If it’s over 85 degrees Fahrenheit, airlines will not fly pets as checked baggage — the same applies if it’s below 45 degrees. In addition, some airlines have restrictions on certain types of … Continue reading

What to Know Before you Fly with Fido—Part 2

Did you know that more than a half a million dogs and cats are transported on commercial airlines each year? And according to the Air Transport Association, 99% of the animals reach their destinations without incident. (Not bad, unless your pet was part of that one percent.) In my previous blog I provided facts to consider before you take to the skies with your beloved furry friends domestically. If you are flying internationally check out El Al Israel Airlines, it was the first international airline to introduce a frequent flyer plan with its Points for Pets program in 2001. The … Continue reading

What to Know Before you Fly with Fido

If you thought the recent luggage fees, additional fuel surcharges, and add-ons for food and drinks were all that you had to contend with when traveling at 35,000 feet, think again. If you are looking to take Fido or Fifi along on your cross-country journey plan to dig deep. A number of airlines are making two-legged passengers pay more to tote their four-legged friends on planes. For example, JetBlue just raised its one-way pet fee for in-cabin travel from $75 to $100. However, it’s trying to temper the move by also throwing in some incentives for pet owners. According to … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Fido Gets Banned From Flights and Kids Take Flight

FIDO GETS THE BOOT My daughter will be so disappointed (she loves animals)… and the parents of Fluffy and Fido won’t be very happy either. It seems Air Canada is planning to ban all pets from its passenger planes effective July 15th. According to airline executives, giving cats and dogs a ride in the cargo hold became too much trouble because of increasing load factors as well as tighter security measures that have led to an increase in checked baggage. An Air Canada spokesperson put it this way: “Animals in the hold actually reduce the amount of space we have … Continue reading

Flying With Fido At Your Feet

In one of my prior travel blogs I detailed Midwest Airlines’ gourmet meal options (see “New Menu Options at 35,000 Feet”). Now for you pet lovers who can’t bear to leave Fido or Fluffy at home (or who cringe at the thought of your furry friend flying in a cold cargo hold) some good news from the Milwaukee based airline. A new policy will allow travelers and their small dogs to fly together in the airplane cabin. The airline has given the go-ahead to passengers who want to bring up to two small dogs (like a dachshund or Shih Tzu) … Continue reading

Can’t Win for Losing

Summertime and the living is easy… No pencils, no books, no teacher’s dirty looks… and no set bedtime. What time do your children hit the hay during the summer months? In many families, summer sleepy time is dictated by Mother Nature.  Sunset bedtimes are the norm for many clans, much to the delight of young children, who gain at least a couple hours of extra playtime during the months of June, July and August. My 8-year-old is one of millions who has enjoyed bonus awake time this summer.  She’s spent it capturing fireflies, biking, making s’mores and attending all-night un-slumber … Continue reading

Travel Smart and Save

You don’t have to be a super sleuth in order to score big savings on travel expenses. Rather, a little common sense can go a long way when you are venturing away from home. The following tips illustrate how to stretch your dollar when you are on the road: Public Transportation: Don’t underestimate the power of public transportation when you are traveling to big cities. Buses, subways and other rapid transit systems can be huge money-savers, especially if you are exploring a major metropolitan area like Chicago, New York or Washington, D.C. One way to save is to purchase a … Continue reading

Attack of the Angry Dachshund

Oh yes. The dogs and I had another adventure! I have a few different walking routes through the apartment complex that I use at different times of day. In the early hours of the morning, it’s usually safe to go past the playground — no running kids to get Lally all riled up. During the day, I try to stick to the street side of the complex to avoid kids on skateboards (another trigger for Lally). Late at night, we can walk just about anywhere. One morning last week, I decided to take a chance and walk by the playground. … Continue reading
