Fall Travel: Peak Peeping Destinationsby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 30 Oct 2009 11:39 PM In a few weeks fall's brilliant palette of yellows, oranges and reds will be a distant memory. So, why not make the most of the gorgeous weather and even prettier landscapes by taking a leaf-peeping trip to some of the nation's most popular fall foliage hot spots: EAST COAST The historic towns of Virginia's northernmost counties are the ideal destinations for avid leaf peepers. Load up the family and take US 50 west to Sky Meadows State Park. That's where you will find acres of wooded trails that lead to open pastures and panoramic views of blazing fall foliage. Another option is to explore bucolic Winchester, where fall leaves provide the backdrop for a bumper crop of working farms and orchards. If you are short on time, then consider taking the self-guided Apple Trail driving tour. The self-regulated trip allows you to sample ciders, pies and scenic vistas at your own pace. If you want to stay closer to D.C., then head out on Route 7, which leads to the wooded Washington & Old Dominion Trail near Leesburg. The views of fall's spectacular color change are amazing from the popular trail system. SOUTH If you are looking for a scenic route a bit farther south, then head to Chattanooga, Tennessee. The region offers incredible views of the most vibrant autumn colors from the top of Lookout Mountain in Rock City (which boasts panoramic vistas over seven U.S. states) to the dramatic Tennessee River Gorge, where you can watch endangered species, such as bald eagles and ospreys, fly over breathtaking seasonal scenery. If you prefer to take in the sights from your vehicle, then head out on the Cherohala Skyway, which winds its way up some 5,400 feet into the mountains of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. The popular drive makes a perfect day trip from Chattanooga. Another way to view fall foliage is from a railroad car. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum offers 100-mile train journeys through the end of November.
