Get Ready to Visit Potter’s Playground

It’s being billed as the “most anticipated theme park attraction in history.” The “Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” is on track to open in the spring of 2010 at Universal Orlando Resort, and the buzz surrounding its debut is deafening. I blogged about the new theme park area a couple of years ago, but now the final pieces of the (estimated) $300 million Potter playground puzzle are finally coming together, and soon fans of the boy wizard will be able to board high tech rides, such as “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.” The futuristic ride was named by author … Continue reading

Usher Gets Ready to Kick It and Harry Potter Hopefuls Prepare to Kick Someone

R&B singer Usher is preparing for not one, but two huge new roles in the coming weeks. The entertainer is less than a month away from becoming a first time father (his wife Tameka Foster is reportedly due to give birth to a son in early December) and he is getting ready to fill some big dancing shoes—Gene Kelly’s. Usher told reporters he is currently preparing to shoot the Movie Rocks show in which he will perform a remake of Gene Kelly’s “Singing in the Rain.” The singer says he was even more thrilled when producers told him the shoot … Continue reading

Harry Potter Mania

My daughter doesn’t know how to read yet, but even she knows who Harry Potter is. Not because we have any of the books. (We don’t.) Not because we’ve seen any of the movies (We haven’t.) It’s simply because it is virtually impossible to go anywhere these days without running into the boy wizard’s mug. Commercials for the latest Harry Potter movie are constantly on TV. Photos of the final book are all over the Internet. And stories regarding “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” leaks and lawsuits are saturating the evening news. Copies of the seventh and likely final … Continue reading

Waiting for Harry Potter

I am seeing more and more countdowns to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on blog sites, it newspapers, and even on the screen saver of one of our computers. Here are some fun things to do while you are waiting: Guess the last word of the last book. And no, it’s not scar. J.K. Rowling said she changed it in “the eleventh hour”. You can hold your own contest among your family and friends. Even if you don’t have prizes, it’s still fun to guess. Besides, true Harry fans will love debating the last word. Go shopping for some … Continue reading

Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix (2007)

It’s official, Harry Potter is back. At 12:01 a.m. last night, we sat down in a theater to preview Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix. Normally, I wouldn’t go see a movie so late, but my daughter is so eager to see the film, I wanted to preview it first. She’s a huge fan of Harry Potter, both the books and the films. Please note that this review will contain major spoilers if you have not read the books first. Background At the end of Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire Harry came face to face with … Continue reading

Teachers Use Harry Potter to Teach Science

I personally have not had the Harry Potter experience. I have not read the books or watched the movies. There is not a religious reason behind my choosing not to take part in Harry Potter. I simply do not have an interest in the types of media that Rowling offers. However, there is dramatic reasoning in why some others will condemn anyone who mentions liking the series of books and movies. There has been a lot of controversy about the magic and witchery that is portrayed in the writings of the Harry Potter books. I have even known of some … Continue reading

Exciting News For Harry Potter Fans

Attention all Harry Potter fans: you can forget about having to settle for yet another vacation at Disneyland or Coney Island—soon you will be able to get your kicks at the place your young hero calls home (or at least a version of it). Universal Orlando Resort just announced it plans to open a Harry Potter theme park that will allow fans of the boy magician to visit some of the same iconic locations featured in the best selling books and blockbuster movies. “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” is scheduled to open at Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park … Continue reading

Too Big for Summer Fun

Summer fun came to a screeching for a visitor to the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter. According to reports, a 300-pound man was recently turned away when he tried to board the roller coaster, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, because he couldn’t fit into the ride’s seat. Universal reps say all the seat restraints on the ride require three clicks from the safety bar. If the bar does not click three times for a passenger, the person is asked to forfeit his seat. Sounds like a real summer bummer, right? Not if you are Banks Lee. Lee is … Continue reading

More Dream Trips for Kids

If you have a Harry Potter fan in your home and haven’t solidified your summer travel plans—–stop what you are doing. I just found the ultimate getaway for kids (and their parents) who are fascinated with the boy wizard. Never mind about Universal Orlando Resort’s new Harry Potter theme park that I detailed in a previous blog. “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” is not scheduled to open at Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park until late next. In the meantime why not embark on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the places that inspired the Potter series? The seven-night trip takes … Continue reading

Weekend Fun In Florida

The Green Bay Packers have a bye week this Sunday so my neighbors are going to Florida. (Nice, huh?) They are season ticket holders who don’t travel if it means missing a home game. So, they are off the hook for a couple of weeks. And (sniff) here I sit (sniff, sniff) watching them pack up their motor home from my window (they leave first thing in the morning) wishing I could smuggle my own bags—and body–in their cottage on wheels. We’ve picked up more than 3 inches of rain since Sunday and I would give anything to escape the … Continue reading
