More Family-Friendly Spring Break Vacation Hot Spots

There’s nothing like including your kids in your bucket list. I do it all the time. I have a list of places I want to travel to and explore before I die and I’d like to take my daughter with me to as many of them as possible. With spring break just around the corner, now is the time for us to start crossing items off the list, including visiting some of the world’s most family-friendly travel destinations: Washington, D.C.: Ideally, I would love to visit the tourist hot spot during the cherry blossom festival, but with so much to … Continue reading

Educational Holiday Getaways

Who says kids can’t learn something while on Christmas vacation… besides not licking frozen lamp posts? The United States is home to a number of award-winning educational facilities designed to make learning fun for kids of all ages. If you are looking for tried and true boredom busters this holiday season, consider traveling to the following: Experience Music Project The Seattle-based Frank Gehry-designed music mecca is a haven for rock stars in the making. Educational Holiday Vacation Destinations

Here’s a holiday gift any parent can appreciate: a membership to the Art Institute of Chicago. It’s the gift that keeps on giving in my opinion, and I can attest to its benefits first hand. My BFF gifted my young daughter with a family membership last Christmas and we’ve had a ball making the most of our visits. Most people would question gifting a young child a membership to such a serious “adult” art establishment, but you’d be surprised by how many child-centered exhibits the Art Institute houses. In addition to its awe-inspiring collections from masters, such as Monet, O’Keeffe, … Continue reading

Saving Money on Your Next Vacation—Book Early

Timing is everything in life and that goes double when you are planning a vacation. I try to provide as many cost-saving travel tips as possible in this blog and regular readers know that high on the list of advice is to book early. Doing so almost always guarantees cheaper seats—whether by sea, air or land. To prove my point I found a great deal to the Greek Islands that allows you to skip the crowds and the sky-high prices. The catch: Book now travel later. The bargains are good now but you won’t be taking your trip until the … Continue reading

Education Vacation: The National World War II Museum

It’s the one place I wished my grandfather could have visited before he died. My grandpa was a member of the U.S. Army’s highly decorated 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry. It is the only remaining Infantry unit in the Army Reserve force structure. Many books have chronicled the heroic actions of the members of the 100th Battalion and 442nd Infantry. Many note that none have shed their blood more valiantly for America than the Japanese Americans who served in these units while fighting enemy forces in Europe during World War II. My grandfather was a proud member of this elite group … Continue reading

D.C.’s Newest Family-Friendly Educational Destination

There is no question Washington, D.C. is one of the foremost educational vacation destinations in the world. And now families have yet another attraction to add to their list of must-see sites in the area. D.C.’s Newseum is a massive, multi-million dollar complex that celebrates newsgathering and teaches visitors “news is necessary to a functioning democracy.” The $450 million, 643,000-square-foot translucent structure held its grand opening ceremony today. The Newseum sits on Pennsylvania Avenue a few blocks from the Capitol near the National Mall and is preparing to host more than a million visitors in its first year. For $20 … Continue reading

Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation

With the economy slumping, the price of gas at an all time high, and food costs soaring some families are seriously considering staying home this summer instead of embarking on an annual vacation. As such I have decided to create a new series in the TRAVEL blogs called: “Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation.” Each week I will spotlight a popular family friendly vacation destination and list ways you can take in the sights without breaking the bank. Today we begin with San Diego, California. It’s one of the nation’s top tourist destinations, but it is also one of the … Continue reading

Educational Vacations Get Boost from Hotel

I have long touted the value of taking family trips to educational destinations. The trend, which began with learning vacations for adults, is now being embraced by teens, who are looking to do more with their downtime than simply work on a gnarly tan. Loews Hotels recently introduced a program they are calling “Edu-cations.” The travel package is tailored to teens and combines a stay with learning a new skill such as cooking, golfing, surfing or getting an inside look at Nashville’s Music Row or New York’s financial markets. Some of the packages include: “Surfin’ Safari.” This package is offered … Continue reading

Even More Kid-Friendly Vacation Destinations with Meaning

All this week I have been focusing on the upcoming spring break vacation season (after all, Easter is just two months away). Typically, it’s a time when parents take advantage of their children’s break from classes and head off on a family adventure. But instead of making a beeline to mingle with oversized mice in California or Florida, perhaps this year you could consider taking a trip that offers more educational value. As I mentioned in my previous blogs, vacations are great opportunities to learn about new cultures and take part in hands-on history lessons, especially if you choose the … Continue reading
