Must-Have Travel Accessory for Kids

I’ve spent the last eight years racking up more than 160,000 frequent flyer miles with my daughter during our annual jaunts from Wisconsin to Hawaii.  If all goes according to plan, we can get from our home to my parents’ house in roughly 18 hours. Of course, things rarely go according to plan. Honestly, I’ve lost track of how many hours I’ve spent in various airplanes and airports with a young child who would rather be anywhere other than in an airplane or airport. What I do recall are all of the mistakes I’ve made during those seemingly endless flights. … Continue reading

Win a Trip to See Some Dinosaurs!

Does your young child have a fascination with dinosaurs? Would you like to be able to afford a trip to take your kids to see some awesome dinosaur exhibits? Enter the Big Adventure Sweepstakes that is being held by Amtrak and The Jim Henson Company. Someone will win a family trip for 4 to see dinosaurs! I think that the majority of kids go through a “dinosaur phase”. This can affect both boys and girls, and typically hits when the child is between the ages of 4 and 7. It is a phase where a kid discovers dinosaurs and immediately … Continue reading

Dinosaur (2000)

In this sweeping 2000 computer animated film, we get caught up in the prehistoric world of the dinosaurs. An unhatched dinosaur egg is stolen from its nest and carried off to an island inhabited by lemurs, where it is adopted by a cute little lemur family. The father of the lemur family is worried that taking in a strange animal will be harmful to the group, but as the baby dinosaur hatches and looks up at him with big, soft eyes, he can’t help but accept the fact that this baby is here to stay. Years go by and the … Continue reading

Travel Updates: Dinosaur Museum and Airport Parking

Here’s a quick update on two travel items I wrote about in previous blogs: Wyoming Dinosaur Center In a previous blog I told you about our family’s summer plans to toss dirt around in Thermopolis, Wyoming—home of the Wyoming Dinosaur Center. If that blog didn’t convince you that you too should be giving your child the unique opportunity to dig deep for a piece of history, perhaps this bit of information will. Just a few days ago the center opened its new exhibit featuring a rare birdlike dinosaur specimen. According to experts, the Wyoming Dinosaur Center’s Archaeopteryx specimen is second … Continue reading

DINO-mite Adventure For Kids

In my previous blogs I provided you with a number of destinations that cater to dinosaur lovers. My daughter recently discovered the remains of a Brachiosaurus in a very unusual location and has since made it her mission to persuade me to take her to other attractions that feature the prehistoric giants. Consequently, I’ve been busy trying to dig up information on kid-friendly dino-destinations. We’ve done the dinosaur digs at our local children’s museum (“That was soooo yesterday, mom”), visited SUE at Chicago’s Field Museum, and planned a trip to Wyoming to uncover the remains of a Camarasaurus. I’m dinosaured … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Free Gas, It’s a Gas, and a Ghastly Sight

FREE GAS It doesn’t get much cheaper than free, right? Then again, is anything in life truly free? You can ponder that while you are trying to win 9,000 gallons of gas from a West Virginia casino. Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack is offering guests who are considering canceling their summer road trip due to record high gas prices the chance to walk away with fuel that is estimated to be worth more than $30,000. It’s no joke. The casino is giving away a tanker of fuel to one lucky person on April 18th. Players can earn entries for the grand prize … Continue reading

The Land Before Time (1988)

Probably the most classic of all Don Bluth films, “The Land Before Time” takes us back to the age of the dinosaurs, long before man roamed the earth. It’s a time of great upheaval, figuratively and literally, for a small dinosaur named Littlefoot. His mother, a wonderful, caring female, is killed while protecting him from a T-rex, and an earthquake rips his land apart, causing huge gashes in the ground which separate him from his grandparents. Other baby dinosaurs are separated from their caregivers as well, including Cera, the proud and egotistical Triceratops who will have nothing to do with … Continue reading

A Weekend In Indianapolis

In a few weeks we will pack up the family car and head to Indianapolis for a friend’s wedding. I’ve been to the area several times, but never with a toddler, so this trip should be interesting. I’ve been doing research on the city’s family-friendly attractions, and if all goes according to plan we will roll into Indianapolis with enough time to visit a few of them before the wedding festivities get underway. Our plan is to spend four days in Indianapolis—though two of them will be spent participating in wedding-related events. The other two days we plan to visit … Continue reading

Hot Summer Fun

Now that the school year is coming to an end, many parents will need to make alternate childcare plans. For most single parents with younger children, daycare will be the place they will most likely stay throughout the day during the summer months. Older school age children, who are not able to be left unsupervised during the day, and who have been in the daycare setting for several years, may feel that traditional daycare can be less than ideal for them during the summer months. In order to help relieve the doldrums of summer, many daycare centers are creating a … Continue reading
