Delta Death

I could make a terrible tie-in between the following sad travel incident and the fact that Delta Airlines just announced it will now be charging passengers on domestic flights $50 to check in a second bag, but out of respect for Michaele Carnahan, I will restrain myself.

According to news reports, the 61-year-old was found dead in the restroom of a Delta Airlines plane shortly before the aircraft landed in Atlanta yesterday morning. A spokeswoman for the airline said it was unclear how the woman died or how long she was in the plane's lavatory before she was found.

Responding Atlanta police officers reported today that Carnahan's seatmate said that she had not appeared to be ill, but she was carrying medication with her on the flight from Los Angeles to Atlanta.

Reports say Delta Flight 950 departed Los Angeles at 10:29 p.m. Tuesday, and shortly before 6 a.m., Wednesday a passenger asked a flight attendant to check on Carnahan, just as the plane was making its final descent into Atlanta. Police say the passenger said Carnahan had been in the restroom for about a half hour prior to the plane landing.

According to a Delta spokesperson, crew members found Carnahan in the restroom unresponsive. A doctor on the plane reportedly checked Carnahan's vital signs and informed flight attendants that she was dead.

A spokesperson from Delta told reporters that Carnahan was on her way from her home in Ventura, California, to Florida for a wedding.

How sad. I can't imagine what the person (or persons) who planned to pick up Caranahan at the airport in Florida must have felt when airline reps informed him or her that she died in mid-air.

And isn't amazing that whenever one of these types of stories makes headlines there always seems to be a doctor or some other emergency medical worker on board just by chance.

UPDATE: Officials say the woman died from a heart abnormality. Medical examiners Carnahan had a pre-existing heart condition.
