Day Trips From New York City

I love the Food Network. I have been a die-hard fan for years--long before Giada, Paula Deen, and the Barefoot Contessa came on the scene. I've been glued since Bobby Flay engaged in his first battle against Jack McDavid on Grillin' and Chillin'. I've been hooked since the Two Hot Tamales whipped up their very first champurrado. And, of course, I became a true blue Iron Chef fan since the instant I saw chef Masaharu Morimoto whack the heck out of a fresh lobster.

When the famous Japanese chef opened his new restaurant, Morimoto, in Philadelphia I was so disappointed. Why couldn't he just have opened it in New York so I could experience his fancy dishes when I traveled to the Big Apple to visit family? My moaning was quickly silenced by my cousin who astutely pointed out that Philly is really not as far from Manhattan as I may have thought. Depending on traffic you can make the trip by car in about two hours. (Greyhound says they can get you there in less than 90 minutes, but I've never tested their claim.) It's about 100 miles one way and if you can schedule your drive between the hours of 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. you might come out of the experience with a little more of your sanity intact.

Philadelphia is a destination city in its own right, but I can tell you that it also makes a great day excursion from nearby New York City. It's far cheaper to fly into New York and drive to "The City of Brotherly Love." And, think of all the attractions you can knock off your must-see list---the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Morimoto, Geno's or Pat's for a famous Philly cheese steak, among the city's other world-famous sites.

Another day trip worth taking from Manhattan is to Central Valley, specifically, to the Woodbury Common Premier Outlets. Don't get me wrong; I love to stroll along 5th Avenue in New York and peek inside some of the planet's finest shops, only I can't afford to walk out with any of the items I try on there. To satiate my appetite for bargains I drive about an hour north of Manhattan to Central Valley, New York to the 220 store-outlet that features upscale shops including Versace, Max Mara, Dolce & Gabbana and Neiman Marcus. The items are still top rate only the prices have been drastically reduced. (Not as low as ones found at Target, but dramatically lower than if you were shopping at the shop's Manhattan locations.) The outlet mall is so popular that bus companies offer daily trips from the Port Authority terminal seven times a day, year round. The round trip costs $35 for adults, $17.50 for children. Not a bad way for shopoholics to spend a day outside of the city.
