Cozy Retreat In Paradiseby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 15 Jan 2008 02:20 PM Are you a "Wheel of Fortune" fan? I used to be a die-hard fan when I was younger, but these days I rarely if ever get to watch the popular TV game show. So imagine my surprise when I was flipping through the channels last week (I was actually trying to find out more about the winter tornados that hit the southern part of our state) and stumbled across an episode of "Wheel of Fortune." I was just about to continue flipping when my eye caught a spoke on the wheel with "Volcano" written on it. Someone who was born and raised on an island created by five active volcanoes would have likely done the same. Turns out the Bamboo Orchid bed and breakfast located near my hometown on the Big Island of Hawaii (near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park) got some major FREE national exposure thanks to the popular televised game show. A stay at the cozy cottage (which just happens to be the same place my brother took my sister-in-law before proposing to her) was being offered as a prize on the nationally syndicated game show that airs in 211 U.S. markets and is watched by 47 million viewers each week. (What did I say about major exposure?) Sadly (for the contestants) no one won the prize. Which means the owners of the B&B scored big time because when nobody wins the exposure is virtually free, save for the membership dues the B&B's owners pay to belong to bedandbreakfast.com, a website that provides info on some 6,500 B&Bs worldwide. Last week bedandbreakfast.com was the prize partner on "Wheel of Fortune." In any event, if you are looking for a comfortable place to stay the next time you are visiting the Big Island my brother and sister-in-law highly recommend the Bamboo Orchid B&B. They had a great time in the cottage style home, which featured private baths, fireplaces and a gourmet tropical breakfast. Each of the B&B's rooms has its own name. My brother stayed in the Royal Orchid Suite. Some of the highlights of that particular room include a canopy queen bed, a hot tub, a heated towel rack, and French doors that lead to an outdoor deck where you can sit and enjoy the views of a tropical rainforest and the fragrant smells of Hawaii's exotic flowers. The prices for the rooms at the Bamboo Orchid B&B are comparable to all of the hotels in Hilo (the closest city to Volcanoes National Park). For more information on the B&B click here.
