Busy Airport Gets Major Boost

The good news: London Heathrow Airport just opened a new $8.6 billion state-of-the-art terminal with some of the most luxurious accommodations in the world. The bad news: Unless you are a higher-fare premium customer you won’t get the opportunity to indulge in the terminal’s ultra-luxe amenities. Still, airport officials say the addition of the new Terminal 5 will greatly improve the travel experience for millions of travelers who fly British Airways. (The new facility was designed specifically for the 30 million or so passengers who fly with the carrier.) For example, frequent flyers will now be pampered in the terminal’s … Continue reading

Hip and Happening Airports

What do you do to pass time at an airport? Read? Talk on your cellphone? Shop? Eat? Nashville International Airport leads the pack with its live concert series. The airport began offering the live shows in the early ’90s as country music was becoming increasingly popular among younger fans. Today, musicians from all backgrounds play the airport’s five stages almost every day of the week. Airport officials say they … Continue reading

Airport Perks

No airline passenger enjoys being delayed regardless of what airport he or she is sentenced to do time in. However, there are some airports in the United States where conquering boredom is a bit easier than others. Take a look: SAN DIEGO San Diego International is getting passengers jazzed up about flying into or out of its facility by continuing its popular Terminal Jazz Performance concerts. The mini music fests are free and accessible to ticketed passengers and have been a proven hit among travelers since the program’s inception more than a year ago. The airport’s 2008 season will kick … Continue reading

Flu Shots Made Easy For Frequent Flyers

There was a time when airports were known simply as places to a catch flight. These days a growing number of airports offer world-class shopping, fine dining, spas, wireless Internet access, even dinosaurs. So should you be surprised that many North American airports are now offering… flu shots? Nope. A few weeks ago about a dozen airports across the country started offering no-appointment-needed influenza immunizations to jet-setting passengers. If you plan to fly in or out of airports in Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, Denver, Newark, Las Vegas and Vancouver British Columbia you can get a flu shot right at the … Continue reading

Hotels Making Life Easier on “Little People”

Fans of The Learning Channel’s “Little People, Big World” will appreciate this next travel tidbit. After all, it is the brainchild of Matt Roloff, star of the popular TLC show. Thanks to Roloff’s ingenuity hotels across the country are now offering complimentary kits to help short people cope with rooms designed for their larger counterparts. Just a few weeks ago the Carlson Hotel brand, which runs familiar properties such as Radisson, Park Plaza, Park Inn and Country Inns & Suites began offering short guests items including step stools, reaching tools and bars to lower the closet clothes rack at its … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits—What’s In A Name?

Years ago I spent nearly 7 hours in the Phoenix airport waiting for my ATA flight to Hawaii to get off the ground. Allegedly, the plane had a “mechanical problem” that needed to be fixed in order for us to take off. Interestingly, the “mechanical problem” morphed into a weather delay (the weather in Arizona was fine) around hour five of our wait. In any case, when we finally departed I remember thinking I never want to be stuck in that airport again. What airport? Exactly. For as many hours as I spent walking around the place I never once … Continue reading
