New York City–A Biker’s Paradise?

New York City… honored for bike friendliness? I thought I had heard wrong, or perhaps, the guy on the news had made an error. However, upon further viewing I realized that someone (actually, an entire group of legitimate someones) really believes that the concrete jungle with its convey of yelling yellow cab drivers, take no prisoner pedestrians, and hordes of hassled truck drivers is a premiere place to travel on two wheels. Believe it or not, the League of American Bicyclists just awarded New York City a medal for bike friendliness. Okay, it’s a bronze medal, but considering it ranked … Continue reading

The Great American Gas Out Fizzles Out

Did you take part in yesterday’s Great American Gas Out? It was a grass roots movement to have all motorists boycott gas stations for one day with the hopes it would somehow have an impact on gas prices. One email I received promoting the boycott had a goal of taking $2.3 billion in oil company profits. Needless to say, gas prices in my area are just as high today ($3.30 a gallon) as they were yesterday. So to the man who I ran into yesterday in the check out line at Wal-Mart who insisted that one-day boycott had exactly zero … Continue reading

Holiday Travel: How To Save Money On The Way To Grandma’s House

Well, here we are just two weeks shy of what official road warriors (those men and women at the American Automobile Association) are calling one of the busiest travel days of the year. It seems like just yesterday that I was blogging about the busy summer travel season… but, alas, time waits for no man and no man likes having to wait in traffic SO with that in mind this section of our “Holiday Travel” series takes us back to the basics. Yes, this blog is for all you merry motorists making your way to grandma’s house for the holidays. … Continue reading

Save Money—Drive An Air Car

You’ve heard of cars that are powered by the sun, and cars that are powered by electricity, hydrogen, even vegetable oil. But, how about air? A father-and-son team from France insists air power is no joke. Guy and Cyril Negre say they have spent several years tooling with the idea of fueling cars with compressed air at their factory in southern France. Plain old air compressed in the tank. They say it’s not only cheap but also helps preserve the environment. For the past few months the team has been trying to convince skeptics that their idea is a winner. … Continue reading

Do You Brake (Or Veer) For Bicyclists?

In the past I have written blogs about the importance of wearing a bike helmet, but prior to yesterday I never thought about how I reacted when driving by bicyclists who were not wearing helmets. Perhaps, I shook my head in disgust or let out a sigh, or perhaps, even hoped that they wouldn’t get into an accident. But, I never took into account what I did behind the wheel. Well, not until yesterday. Yesterday I read an interesting report done by a Bristish professor who was run over twice by vehicles while he conducted a study on bicycle safety. … Continue reading

What Was He Thinking?

How far would you go to save or make money? I told you about my neighbor Joe’s grand plan to conserve money on gas. I thought he was ambitious, but Joe’s efforts to save cash pale in comparison to what one Louisiana man is undertaking to strike it rich. Steve Jordan of Lake Charles, Louisiana has just announced that he is drilling an oil well near his home to combat skyrocketing oil prices. The 52-year-old oilman told local reporters that the well would stretch 8,500 feet under his house and swimming pool and below the adjacent Calcasieu River. He says … Continue reading

The Gas Pill—Will It Really Relieve The Pain At The Pump?

These days who isn’t looking for ways to save money on gas? How nice it would be if we could just find a quick fix to the outrageous prices, perhaps, if someone could just invent a pill that would make the pain at the pump go away. Wouldn’t that be a dream come true? Well, hold on to your wallets folks, because believe it or not someone has actually come up with a pill that claims to save money at the pump. It’s called an MPG-CAP. The pill’s manufacturer claims that the pill helps the fuel “burn quicker, and burn … Continue reading

From Bikes to Blades

Recently I blogged about my neighbor Joe and his bike. Like many of us, Joe is outraged by the skyrocketing price of gas and uses his bike as an alternative means of transportation. Every evening, I see him in his work shirt, slacks, and helmet pedaling down home from work. I (along with other neighbors) applaud his efforts (from our air conditioned vehicles), all the while knowing full well we would likely not be following in his two-wheeled tracks. I admire Joe’s steadfast commitment and willing share his story with anyone who rants about the price of gas. I was … Continue reading
