Big Deals in the Big Dby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 09 Jan 2008 11:40 PM Traditionally I don't keep tabs on hotel deals in Texas, but with the Green Bay Packers poised to take on the Dallas Cowboys in a divisional championship game (provided both teams win their respective play off games this weekend) I've had several friends ask me if there were ways to save money in Texas should the road to the Super Bowl run through Dallas. While I didn't find a ton of deals in the Dallas metro-area I did come across a number of spectacular hotel rates at other properties scattered around the state. It might not help football fans, but they are great finds for northerners looking to fly south and escape the winter chill for a few days. GALVESTON Wyndham hotels (all three of them in the Galveston area) are offering rates as low as $105 per night. Each of the lodgings offers access to the beaches bordering the Gulf of Mexico and the legendary architecture and popular art galleries of the Strand Historic District. The Wyndham's winter room rates are as follows: Harbor House $105 per night, Tremont House $105 per night and the Hotel Galvez $119 per night. However, the offer is only good through the end of the month. In February the rates jump to $115 at the Harbor House, $135 at Tremont House, and $139 at Hotel Galvez. MARFA High in the Chihuahuan Desert sits the west Texas town of Marfa. If you are looking to take your sweetie on a pre-Valentine's Day romantic getaway the boutique Thunderbird Hotel in Marfa is a destination to consider. It features a pool, multiple fireplaces, and rooms outfitted with hand-woven Peruvian blankets. The hotel's romance package includes 10% off the cost of your room, plus a chilled bottled of Prosecco, Vosges chocolates, Mexican votive candles, a complimentary movie rental, a CD of romantic tunes, pink Christmas lights, and daily coffee delivery for two. Rates start at $155 per room for the first night of the package and $113 for each additional night. AUSTIN The Austin Hotel located in the city's SoCo neighborhood has year-round room rates starting at $87. While the Hotel San Jose, which features a pool and garden, also offers year-round rates starting at $95 per night for a room with a shared bathroom. FORT WORTH If you are willing to stay at least two nights the Texas White House B&B in Fort Worth is offering room rates from $125 per night. The quaint lodging features a wraparound porch, a garden filled with native plants like pink rock roses, and a lending library stocked with Texas-related reading material.
