The Disneyfication of the Olympics

Thousands of people around the world cram into their local roads, to contribute to the joyous roar of the crowd as a runner pounds past, bearing a flickering flame above their heads. Athletes become celebrities, grinning at the world first from a podium amidst a colorful snowstorm of confetti, then from orange cereal boxes under the fluorescent glow of the grocery store. Today the Olympics are synonymous with fanfare. I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty tonight at the opening ceremony in Vancouver. What few people know is that before the 1960 Winter Olympics, and Walt Disney’s involvement in them, the … Continue reading

Are You Going to the Winter Olympics?

T-minus 14 days until the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Vancouver, British Columbia, is getting ready to shine in the international spotlight, but I won’t be there. Will you? As a broadcast journalist, I had the incredible opportunity to cover the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. However, I’ve never attended the Winter Games. It’s a travel dream of mine that I don’t know when will come true. Still, the dream is alive for more than 500 athletes and coaches, almost 11,000 members of the media and nearly 350,000 visitors, who are expected to descend upon the stunning city on the … Continue reading

Taking Your Preschooler Skiing – What Equipment Do You Need?

I love cross country skiing. Considering that I live in the host city of the 2010 Winter Olympics where downhill skiing prevails, I am a bit of an oddball. I remember my first skiing experience – in Norway, a much more logical place for cross-country skiing. On rented skis, I stood at the top of a small hill, and with a gentle push I was off, hurtling downwards on a relatively steep slope, right towards the traffic on the road below. Needless to say, I exited that skiing experience rather quickly by bailing to the side of the ski hill. … Continue reading

The eyes of the world are focused on Vancouver as the winter Olympics are currently going on there, but some are looking towards Vancouver for another reason. Celebrate on Ice with Disney

Ice skating was always a part of my life growing up. My brother and I were too uncoordinated to be good at going to rinks ourselves and succeed at much other than garnering a wide collection of bruises, but my mother loved watching ice skating. Any time a major competition aired, my mom would settle in to watch, and I would join her. As the years went by I developed an appreciation for the combination of artistry and athleticism that made up the sport. Our viewing also came with a healthy dose of awe for something we’d never be able … Continue reading

Inspiring Excellence

What do you do to help inspire your preschooler? What do you want your preschooler to feel inspired by? I don’t often think about excellence when it comes to my daughter. Like all parents, I want her to be happy when she grows up, to be sure. I would also like her to make enough money to live a comfortable life. However, as a girl who was interested in science, I felt plenty pushed towards excellence as a child and I am reluctant to do much pushing. Yet here I am in the city that is hosting the Winter Olympics. … Continue reading

Coca-Cola Goes Green

Coke is going green. No, not the drink itself, but the bottles. Coca-Cola announced that it will begin distributing Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Light, and Coke Zero in new greener “plantbottles.” The bottles, which were unveiled at the COP-15 conference, will, in part, contain material that is made from sugar cane and will be biodegradable. Those attending the Winter Olympics in Vancouver will get to try sodas and water in the plantbottles. It is estimated by the Pacific Institute that Coke’s traditional, petroleum based bottles use up to 17 million barrels of oil each year. The new plantbottles will leave a 12 … Continue reading
